Level 12 · Lesson 12 పద్యం చదవడం — ముగింపు
Reading a verse: the capstone
వేమన పద్యం ఒకటి తీసుకుని గణ విభజన, యతి, ప్రాస, అర్థం — అన్నీ కలిపి చదవడం.
Taking one Vemana verse and reading it whole: gaṇas, yati, prāsa and sense together.
గుర్తు చేసుకోండి · You already know this
Twelve levels end here. First you learned to speak — to greet, to describe your house, to tell a story. Then you looked behind those sentences at the grammar that makes them: sandhi, case, verb, compound, sentence, figure, metre. Now we put the whole of it to work on a single verse.
సూత్రాలు · The rules
వేమన శతకమంతా ఆటవెలదిలోనే ఉంది. అందుకే ప్రతి పద్యమూ ఒకే నడకతో ముగుస్తుంది — విశ్వదాభిరామ వినుర వేమ. ఆ చివరి పాదాన్ని మీరు వందసార్లు విన్నారు; ఇప్పుడు దాన్ని కొలవగలరు.
The whole Vemana Śatakam is in āṭavelaḍi, which is why every verse closes on the same walk — విశ్వదాభిరామ వినుర వేమ. You have heard that line a hundred times; now you can measure it.
ప్రక్రియ · Step by step

ఇప్పుడు అర్థం. ఉప్పూ కర్పూరమూ చూడటానికి ఒకేలా ఉంటాయి — రెండూ తెల్లని పలుకులే. కానీ రుచి చూస్తే జాడ వేరు. అలాగే మనుషులంతా ఒకేలా కనిపించినా, వారిలో పుణ్యపురుషులు వేరు. పోలిక బయట; తేడా లోపల.
Now the sense. Salt and camphor look the same — both white grains. Taste them and their natures part. So too: men all look alike, but the good among them are of another kind. The likeness is on the outside; the difference is within.
ఇది ఉపమాలంకారం — పదకొండవ, పన్నెండవ స్థాయిలలో నేర్చుకున్నదే. ఉపమేయం పుణ్యపురుషులు, ఉపమానం కర్పూరం, సాధారణ ధర్మం 'పైకి ఒకేలా ఉండటం', ఉపమావాచకం 'పోలిక'. ఒక్క పద్యంలో ఛందస్సూ అలంకారమూ కలిసి పనిచేయడం ఇలాగే.
This is an upamā, the figure from the previous level: the thing compared is the virtuous man, the thing it is compared to is camphor, the shared property is looking alike from outside, and పోలిక is the word that carries the comparison. Metre and figure working together in one verse — that is what reading Telugu poetry is.

ముగింపు · Use it
This is the last lesson. What you hold now is a method: take any Telugu verse, weigh its syllables, group them, check yati and prāsa, construe the sense. Open the Sumatī Śatakam and read one verse exactly this way. We began by learning to speak and ended by learning to read — that is the తెలుగుబాట.
