గ్రాంథికం, వ్యావహారికం
Literary and spoken Telugu

పాత పుస్తకాల గ్రాంథిక భాషకూ, ఇవాళ్టి వ్యావహారిక భాషకూ మధ్య తేడా; గిడుగు ఉద్యమం.

The gap between the literary Telugu of older books and the spoken standard of today, and how it closed.

గుర్తు చేసుకోండి · You already know this

You have finished twelve levels. Now open a Telugu book and something odd happens: some pages read easily, others feel like a different language. One writer says అతడు వచ్చెను, another says అతను వచ్చాడు. Both are Telugu and both are correct. That is not an error you are missing — it is two registers, and this chapter is about telling them apart.

సూత్రాలు · The rules

తెలుగుకు రెండు ప్రధాన శైలులు — గ్రంథాలలో వాడిన గ్రాంథికం, మాటలలో వాడే వ్యావహారికం.
సూత్రం 1
గ్రాంథికం పాత కావ్యాల, పాత పాఠ్యపుస్తకాల భాష; వ్యావహారికం ఇవాళ్టి మాట, ఇవాళ్టి రాత.
Telugu has two registers: గ్రాంథికం, the language of older books, and వ్యావహారికం, the language people actually speak — and now write.

గ్రాంథికం is book-language. Until the early twentieth century, books, newspapers and school texts were all written in it — while nobody spoke that way. Writing and speech had come apart, and a Telugu child had to learn a second variety of the language to read at all.

రెండు శైలుల మధ్య అతి స్పష్టమైన తేడా క్రియారూపాలలో కనిపిస్తుంది.
సూత్రం 2
గ్రాంథికం: వచ్చెను, చేసెను, చేసితిని, కలదు, ఉన్నది. వ్యావహారికం: వచ్చాడు, చేశాడు, చేశాను, ఉంది.
The clearest difference is in the verb endings: గ్రాంథికం వచ్చెను / చేసితిని / కలదు against వ్యావహారికం వచ్చాడు / చేశాను / ఉంది.

Because the verb comes last in a Telugu sentence, you can classify a page by looking at its last words. Endings in -ెను, -ితిని or the word కలదు mean గ్రాంథికం; endings in -ాడు, -ాను and the word ఉంది mean వ్యావహారికం. That one test settles almost every page you will meet.

సర్వనామాలలోనూ, కొన్ని పదాలలోనూ కూడా ఈ భేదం కనిపిస్తుంది.
సూత్రం 3
గ్రాంథికం: అతడు, ఆమె, ఇచ్చట, ఎచ్చట, ఏమి. వ్యావహారికం: అతను, ఆవిడ, ఇక్కడ, ఎక్కడ, ఏమిటి.
Pronouns and common words shift too: అతడు / ఇచ్చట / ఎచ్చట in the literary register against అతను / ఇక్కడ / ఎక్కడ in the spoken one.
గిడుగు వేంకట రామమూర్తి నాయకత్వంలో నడిచిన వ్యావహారిక భాషోద్యమం రాతను మాటకు దగ్గర చేసింది.
సూత్రం 4
ఆయన జన్మదినమైన ఆగస్టు ఇరవై తొమ్మిదిని తెలుగు భాషా దినోత్సవంగా జరుపుకుంటారు.
Gidugu Venkata Ramamurthy (1863–1940) led the movement that brought written Telugu back to spoken Telugu; his birthday, 29 August, is observed as Telugu Language Day.

Gidugu's argument was simple: children should read and learn in the language they already speak. It was fiercely contested then and is ordinary now — today's newspapers, textbooks, stories and films are all వ్యావహారికం. గ్రాంథికం survives in older literature and in some religious and legal writing, which is exactly where you will still meet it.

ఇవాళ్టి ప్రామాణిక రాతభాష శిష్టవ్యావహారికం; ప్రాంతాలవారీ మాటతీరును మాండలికం అంటారు.
సూత్రం 5
మాండలికాలు: కోస్తా, తెలంగాణ, రాయలసీమ, ఉత్తరాంధ్ర — అన్నీ సరైన తెలుగే.
The modern written norm is శిష్టవ్యావహారికం, 'educated spoken Telugu'. Regional varieties — Telangana, Rayalaseema, Uttarandhra, coastal — are మాండలికాలు, and all of them are proper Telugu.

ప్రక్రియ · Step by step

Practice

'అతడు గ్రామమునకు వెళ్ళెను' — ఇది ఏ శైలి? Which register is this sentence in?
'కలదు' అనే పదానికి వ్యావహారికంలో ఏది సరిపోతుంది? Which is the everyday equivalent of కలదు?
గ్రాంథికం 'నేను చదివితిని' — వ్యావహారికంలో 'నేను ________'. Put the literary form into everyday Telugu.
గ్రాంథిక పదాన్ని దాని వ్యావహారిక రూపంతో జతపరచండి. Match each literary word with its everyday form.
వ్యావహారిక భాషోద్యమానికి నాయకత్వం వహించినది ఎవరు? Who led the movement for the spoken register?
ఇవాళ్టి పత్రికలూ పాఠ్యపుస్తకాలూ ఏ శైలిలో ఉంటాయి? Which register are today's newspapers and textbooks in?

ముగింపు · Use it

Now do this. Open a Telugu newspaper and read one report, watching the verb endings. Then open an older kāvya or purāṇa and read its first page. The difference you could not name before will now be obvious. Finally, say four sentences aloud in the Telugu of your own district — that is proper Telugu too, and knowing which register you are in is what it means to have finished this course.
