Level 12 · Lesson 8
Figures of sense
Simile, metaphor, poetic fancy and hyperbole — the figures whose beauty lives in the meaning.

In Level 11 you broke compounds like ముఖకమలం and సంసారసాగరం into their parts. Behind each of them stands a figure of speech: a face called a lotus, worldly life called an ocean. The last lesson took the ornaments of sound. These four are the ornaments of sense, and they are the ones Telugu poetry leans on hardest.
The rules
Say ఆమె ముఖం చంద్రుని వలె ఉంది and then swap చంద్రుడు for its synonym శశి. The comparison stands untouched, because it was never the sound doing the work. That is the whole difference from last lesson, and the same synonym test settles it every time.
Name the four parts once and you can name them for ever: ఉపమేయం is the thing described, ఉపమానం the thing it is held up against, సమాన ధర్మం the quality they share, and ఉపమా వాచకం the little word that says compare — వలె, లాగా, పోలిన. All four present makes a పూర్ణోపమ; drop any one and it is a లుప్తోపమ.
ఆమె ముఖమే చంద్రబింబం does not compare the face with the moon; it says the face is the moon. The tell is the missing వలె. A simile keeps the two apart and holds them side by side; a metaphor collapses them into one, which is exactly what the compound ముఖకమలం does in a single word.
ఆమె ముఖం చంద్రబింబమో అనునట్లున్నది is neither a comparison nor an identification but a guess entertained aloud — perhaps this face is the moon. The tradition's other name for it, సంభావన, says it exactly. Look for the hedging words అనునట్లు, కాబోలు, ఏమో and you have found an ఉత్ప్రేక్ష.
ఆ మేడలు ఆకాశాన్ని తాకుతున్నాయి — nobody is deceived, and that is the point. Hyperbole overshoots the fact on purpose so that the impression lands, and Telugu poetry uses it constantly for height, speed, beauty and grief.
