Level 12 · Lesson 5 ప్రత్యక్ష, పరోక్ష కథనం
Direct and indirect speech
చెప్పిన మాటను ఉన్నది ఉన్నట్లుగా ఉద్ధరిస్తే ప్రత్యక్ష కథనం; దానికి 'అని' చేర్చి కథకుని మాటగా మారిస్తే పరోక్ష కథనం.
Quoting someone's words as they stood, and turning that quotation into a report with అని.
గుర్తు చేసుకోండి · You already know this
You have been reporting other people's words since Level 5: 'నేను రేపు వస్తాను' అని రవి చెప్పాడు and వర్షం వస్తుందని అనుకున్నాను. Both sentences do the same job — they fit somebody else's words inside your own sentence — and both do it with one small tool, అని. This lesson names the two ways of doing it and shows exactly what changes when you move from one to the other.
సూత్రాలు · The rules
ఉదా: రవి 'నేను రేపు వస్తాను' అని చెప్పాడు. ఇక్కడ 'నేను' అంటే రవి; ఆ మాట రవి నోటిదే కాబట్టి అది అలాగే నిలిచింది.
In రవి 'నేను రేపు వస్తాను' అని చెప్పాడు the నేను is Ravi, not you. The quotation is a sealed box: person, tense and word order inside it stay exactly as the speaker uttered them, and అని closes the box.
ఉదా: రవి తాను రేపు వస్తానని చెప్పాడు. ఇప్పుడు మాట రవిది కాదు, కథకునిది; అందుకే 'నేను' పోయి 'తాను' వచ్చింది.
Now the sentence is yours, not Ravi's, so the deictic words are reset to your point of view: నేను becomes తాను, and a today inside the quotation would become ఆ రోజు outside it. English calls this backshift; Telugu does the same work but with fewer moving parts.
ఇది ఎనిమిదవ స్థాయిలో నేర్చుకున్న ఇత్వ, ఉత్వ సంధులే. అందుకే పరోక్ష కథనంలో 'అని' విడిగా కనబడక క్రియకు అతుక్కుపోతుంది.
This is nothing new — it is the ఇత్వసంధి and ఉత్వసంధి of Level 8 doing their ordinary work. That is why అని so often disappears from view in written Telugu: వస్తుంది plus అని surfaces as the single word వస్తుందని.
'తాను వస్తానని చెప్పాడు' — 'తాను' ప్రథమ పురుష రూపం, కానీ క్రియ 'వస్తాను' ఉత్తమ పురుషలోనే ఉంది. ఇది తెలుగుకే ప్రత్యేకమైన కూర్పు; తప్పు కాదు.
Look closely at తాను వస్తానని చెప్పాడు: the pronoun has shifted to third person but the verb has kept its first-person ending. That mismatch is correct Telugu, not a slip — the reflexive తాను drags the original verb along with it.
అమ్మ 'ఇక్కడికి రా' అని పిలిచింది → అమ్మ ఇక్కడికి రమ్మని పిలిచింది. అలాగే తినుము + అని → తినమని, చెప్పుము + అని → చెప్పమని.
Orders report themselves through the ending -మని: రమ్మని చెప్పాడు (he told me to come), తినమని చెప్పింది (she told me to eat), చెప్పమని అడిగాను (I asked him to tell me). Learn the whole ending as one piece and you will never have to rebuild it.
