Level 11 · Lesson 6
Bahuvrīhi — the compound that points outside itself
A bahuvrīhi names neither of its members but a third thing that possesses them.
You already know this
You have met these words as names in stories: Look at ముక్కంటి closely. Its two pieces mean 'three' and 'eye', yet the word does not mean three eyes — it means Śiva, the one who has them. The compound points past both of its own members to somebody standing outside. That is the whole idea of the bahuvrīhi.
The rules
In every compound so far the meaning sat inside the word: in a tatpuruṣa it sat in the second member, in a dvandva in both. Here it sits in neither. చక్రపాణి is not a discus and not a hand; it is Viṣṇu, who holds the one in the other. The tradition calls this అన్యపదార్థ ప్రాధాన్యం — the chief sense belongs to another word altogether.
This gives you a quick test. Unpack the compound and see how the paraphrase ends. If it ends in కలవాడు — 'he who has' — you are looking at a bahuvrīhi: చక్రము పాణియందు కలవాడు, నాలుగు ముఖములు కలవాడు, మూడు కన్నులు కలవాడు. The తెలుగు example ముక్కంటి shows that this is not a borrowed Sanskrit habit; achcha Telugu builds them too.
Compare two words that share a body. పీతాంబరము is a karmadhāraya and means the yellow garment itself. Add the masculine ending and you get పీతాంబరుడు — the one who wears it, Viṣṇu. Nothing changed but the ending, and the compound flipped from naming a thing to naming its owner. Because the bahuvrīhi describes somebody, it takes whatever gender and number that somebody has.
Step by step
