Level 11 · Lesson 3 కర్మధారయ సమాసం
Karmadhāraya
విశేషణమూ విశేష్యమూ కలిసి, రెండూ ఒకే వస్తువును తెలుపుతూ ఏర్పడే సమాసం కర్మధారయం.
A qualifier and its noun fused into one word, both naming a single thing.
గుర్తు చేసుకోండి · You already know this
పెద్దపులి, మంచిమాట, నల్లకలువ — you have used all three since Level 5 as if they were single words, and in written Telugu they are. But each is two: పెద్దదైన పులి, మంచిదైన మాట, నల్లని కలువ. Notice what is different from last lesson: here no case ending is hiding. Both halves point at one and the same object, one naming it and the other describing it.
సూత్రాలు · The rules
నల్లకలువలో 'నల్ల' వేఱే వస్తువు కాదు; అది కలువ యొక్క గుణమే. కలువ ఒక్కటే వస్తువు. తత్పురుషలో మాత్రం రాజు ఒకరు, భవనం మఱొకటి — రెండు వేఱు వేఱు వస్తువులు. ఈ తేడాయే రెండు సమాసాలనూ వేఱు చేస్తుంది.
In నల్లకలువ there is no second object: నల్ల is simply a property of the lotus, and there is one lotus. Compare రాజభవనం, where the king and the palace are two different things standing in a case relation. One object versus two — that is the line between karmadhāraya and tatpuruṣa, and it is worth over-learning now.
Because a Telugu adjective always stands in front of its noun anyway, this is the ordinary shape of the karmadhāraya — the name simply records where the qualifier sits.
పరీక్ష ఇది: విగ్రహవాక్యంలో 'యొక్క, చేత, కొఱకు, వలన, అందు' లాంటి ప్రత్యయం పెట్టవలసి వస్తే అది తత్పురుష. 'ఐన, అయిన, ని' అని విశేషణంగానే ముగిస్తే అది కర్మధారయం. నల్లని కలువ — ప్రత్యయం అక్కఱలేదు; కాబట్టి కర్మధారయం.
Here is the test. Write the vigraha. If you had to insert యొక్క, చేత, కొఱకు, వలన or అందు, you have a tatpuruṣa. If the front member came out as a plain adjective ending in -ని or -ఐన, you have a karmadhāraya. నల్లని కలువ needs no ending at all, so karmadhāraya it is.
This substitution is a sandhi in form, but it is triggered by the compound type: only a karmadhāraya does it. Recognising the compound therefore tells you which sandhi to expect — the two chapters lean on each other.
ప్రక్రియ · Step by step
