Level 10 · Lesson 2 పురుషం
Person and agreement
ఉత్తమ, మధ్యమ, ప్రథమ అనే మూడు పురుషాలు; ప్రథమపురుషలో క్రియ లింగాన్నీ మహత్తునూ కూడా చూపుతుంది.
The three grammatical persons, and why the third person alone splits by gender and by mahat.
గుర్తు చేసుకోండి · You already know this
నేను చేశాను, నువ్వు చేశావు, అతను చేశాడు, ఆమె చేసింది, వాళ్ళు చేశారు, అవి చేశాయి — you have been getting all six right since Level 2. Same root, same tense; only the tail changes. This lesson names what the tail is looking at, because in Telugu it is looking at more things than an English verb ever does.
సూత్రాలు · The rules
తెలుగు సంప్రదాయంలో లెక్క ఆంగ్లానికి తలకిందులుగా ఉంటుంది — ఆంగ్లంలో 'ఫస్ట్ పర్సన్' అంటే మాట్లాడేవాడు, తెలుగులో మాట్లాడేవాడు ఉత్తమపురుష, మిగిలినవాడు ప్రథమపురుష. పేరు గుర్తుంచుకోవడమే ముఖ్యం, సంఖ్య కాదు.
Careful with the labels: the Telugu tradition calls the speaker ఉత్తమ (highest) and the outsider ప్రథమ (first), which is exactly the reverse of the English numbering. Learn the Telugu names rather than translating them, or you will keep tripping over 'first person'.
అందుకే తెలుగులో కర్తను చెప్పకపోయినా అర్థం చెడదు. 'వచ్చాను' అంటే కర్త నేనే; 'వచ్చారు' అంటే మీరో వాళ్ళో. క్రియ చివరి ముక్క ఆ సమాచారాన్ని ఇప్పటికే మోసుకొస్తోంది.
This is why Telugu can drop the subject and lose nothing. వచ్చాను already says the subject was నేను; వచ్చింది already says it was singular and either feminine or non-human. The ending is doing the work an English pronoun has to do.
మాట్లాడేవాడూ వినేవాడూ ఎదురుగానే ఉంటారు కాబట్టి వాళ్ళ లింగాన్ని క్రియ చెప్పనక్కరలేదు. 'నేను చేశాను' — చెప్పినది మగవాడైనా ఆడవారైనా ఒకే రూపం. అలాగే 'నువ్వు చేశావు' కూడా.
The speaker and the listener are standing right there, so the verb does not bother marking their gender. నేను చేశాను is the same whether a man or a woman says it, and నువ్వు చేశావు is the same whoever you are talking to. All the complexity waits for the third person.
ఇక్కడే తెలుగు వ్యాకరణపు ప్రత్యేకత కనిపిస్తుంది. విభజన పుంలింగం-స్త్రీలింగం అని కాదు, మహత్తు-అమహత్తు అని. ఏకవచనంలో మాత్రం స్త్రీలింగమూ అమహత్తూ ఒకే గూటిలో చేరతాయి — 'సీత వచ్చింది', 'బండి వచ్చింది' రెండూ ఒకటే రూపం.
Here is the Telugu peculiarity. The split is not masculine against feminine but మహత్తు (human, rational) against అమహత్తు (everything else) — and in the singular a woman is grouped with the non-human: సీత వచ్చింది and బండి వచ్చింది take the identical ending. This is a fact of the grammar, not of the culture's esteem, and it comes apart again in the plural.
In the plural the మహత్తు line finally shows: women go with వచ్చారు, animals and things with వచ్చాయి. Notice too that -రు does double duty — మీరు చేశారు (you all) and వాళ్ళు చేశారు (they) end alike, and only the pronoun tells them apart.
ప్రక్రియ · Step by step
