Level 10 · Lesson 1 క్రియ, ధాతువు
Verb and root
ప్రతి క్రియా రూపమూ ధాతువు మీద ప్రత్యయాలు చేరినదే; వాక్యాన్ని ముగించేది సమాపక క్రియ, ముగించనిది అసమాపక క్రియ.
Every Telugu verb form is a root plus suffixes, and every verb is either finite or non-finite.
గుర్తు చేసుకోండి · You already know this
You have been building sentences like ఇంటికి వెళ్ళి, స్నానం చేసి, భోజనం చేశాను since Level 5. There are three verbs in it, but only చేశాను carries the ending -ను that agrees with నేను and closes the sentence. వెళ్ళి and చేసి simply hang, waiting for a verb that will finish the job. That difference — finite against non-finite — is the frame on which this whole level is built.
సూత్రాలు · The rules
నామవాచకం వచన విభక్తి ప్రత్యయాలను తీసుకుంటుంది; క్రియ కాల పురుష ప్రత్యయాలను తీసుకుంటుంది. తొమ్మిదవ స్థాయిలో నేర్చుకున్న ప్రత్యయ పరీక్షే ఇక్కడా పనిచేస్తుంది — పదం వెనుక -ను, -వు, -డు, -ది, -రు చేరుతున్నాయా అని చూడండి.
In Level 9 you sorted words by which suffixes would stick to them. The same test works here. A noun accepts -లు and a case ending; a verb accepts a tense marker and then one of -ను, -వు, -డు, -ది, -రు. Nothing else in Telugu takes that second set.
తెలుగు ధాతువులు చాలావరకు ఉకారంతో ముగుస్తాయి — చేయు, చదువు, వచ్చు. నిఘంటువులో మీకు కనిపించేది ఈ రూపమే. మాటలో మీరు దీన్ని ఎప్పుడూ ఒంటరిగా వాడరు; దానిమీద ఏదో ఒక ప్రత్యయం చేరాకే అది వాక్యంలోకి వస్తుంది.
Telugu roots almost all end in -ఉ: చేయు, చదువు, వచ్చు, ఉండు. That is the citation form, the one a dictionary prints. You never say it bare in a sentence — something has to be added first, and what gets added is the subject of this level.
ఈ వరుసను గుర్తుంచుకోండి — ధాతువు, కాలం, పురుషం. 'చదివాడు' అనే మాటలో చదివ్- అనేది ధాతువు, -ఆ- అనేది భూతకాలం, -డు అనేది ప్రథమపురుష మహద్ ఏకవచనం. మూడు ముక్కలూ ఒకే క్రమంలో నిలుస్తాయి, ఏ క్రియలోనైనా.
Hold on to the order: root, tense, person. In చదివాడు the piece చదివ్- is the root, -ఆ- marks the past, and -డు says third person, human, singular, masculine. Every finite Telugu verb you will meet has those three layers in that sequence.
A converb carries no personal ending, so it cannot tell you who acted. వెళ్ళి means only 'having gone' — the last verb of the sentence decides whether that was I, you or he. This is why a Telugu sentence may pile up as many non-finite verbs as it likes and still needs exactly one finite verb to close it.
ప్రక్రియ · Step by step
