The vocative
పిలిచేటప్పుడు వాడే రూపం — ఓ, ఓరీ, ఓయీ, ఓసీ; రాముడు → ఓ రాముడా!
Calling someone: the particles ō, ōrī, ōyī, ōsī and the special form the noun itself takes.
గుర్తు చేసుకోండి · You already know this
You have been calling people since Level 1: అమ్మా, అక్కా, బాబూ. Set those beside the plain nouns అమ్మ, అక్క, బాబు and you can hear exactly what happened — the last vowel stretched. Telugu has a distinct form for calling someone, and this lesson gives it its name and its rules.
సూత్రాలు · The rules
సంబోధన పదం కర్త కాదు, కర్మ కాదు; అది వాక్యం బయట నిలిచి వినేవారిని పిలుస్తుంది. అందుకే క్రియ దాన్ని బట్టి మారదు — 'ఓ రాముడా, సీత వచ్చింది' అన్నప్పుడు క్రియ సీతను బట్టే ఉంది. రాతలో సంబోధన తర్వాత కామా పెట్టాలి.
A vocative is neither subject nor object; it stands outside the clause and taps the listener on the shoulder. That is why the verb ignores it: in ఓ రాముడా, సీత వచ్చింది the verb వచ్చింది agrees with సీత alone. Telugu marks the vocative off with a comma, exactly as English does. This is also why the tradition does not count it as an eighth case — it is ప్రథమా wearing a calling dress.
ఓ అన్నది అన్ని సందర్భాలకూ పనికొచ్చే పిలుపు — ఓ రాముడా! ఓ మిత్రమా! ఓరీ, ఓయీ, ఓసీ అనేవి చనువును తెలిపేవి; పద్యాలలో, జానపద మాటలో ఎక్కువ కనిపిస్తాయి. నేటి మర్యాదైన సంభాషణలో వీటిని వాడకండి — పరుషంగా వినిపిస్తాయి.
ఓ is the neutral one and always safe. ఓరీ and ఓయీ address a male, ఓసీ a female, and all three carry an intimacy that tips easily into rudeness. You will meet them constantly in poetry and in village speech; in modern polite conversation stay with ఓ, or with no particle at all — the vocative form by itself is enough.
రాముడు → ఓ రాముడా! బాలుడు → ఓ బాలుడా! దేవుడు → ఓ దేవుడా! తత్సమ పదాలకు ప్రాతిపదికం మీదే ఆకారం చేర్చే ప్రాచీన రూపం కూడా ఉంది — ఓ రామా! ఓ కృష్ణా! రెండూ సరైనవే.
A మహత్తు noun in -డు swaps it for -డా: రాముడు → ఓ రాముడా, బాలుడు → ఓ బాలుడా, దేవుడు → ఓ దేవుడా. Beside this stands an older vocative built straight on the Sanskrit stem — ఓ రామా, ఓ కృష్ణా — which is what you hear in every devotional song. Both are correct; only do not mix the two shapes of one name inside a single passage.
అమ్మ → అమ్మా, అక్క → అక్కా, సీత → ఓ సీతా, తల్లి → ఓ తల్లీ, బాబు → బాబూ. బహువచనంలో — మిత్రులు → ఓ మిత్రులారా! సోదరులు → ఓ సోదరులారా! పెద్దలు → ఓ పెద్దలారా!
Everything else simply lengthens: అమ్మ → అమ్మా, సీత → సీతా, తల్లి → తల్లీ, బాబు → బాబూ. In the plural -లు becomes -లారా, which is how every Telugu speech to an audience opens: ఓ మిత్రులారా, ఓ సోదరులారా, ఓ పెద్దలారా.
