Level 9 · Lesson 12 షష్ఠీ విభక్తి
Genitive: కి, కు, యొక్క, లో, లోపల
కి, కు, యొక్క, లో, లోపల అనేవి షష్ఠీ ప్రత్యయాలు; ఇవి సంబంధాన్ని, స్వామ్యాన్ని, గమ్యాన్ని తెలుపుతాయి.
The sixth case gathers possession, relation and goal — and this is where the tradition files the -కి you use every day.
గుర్తు చేసుకోండి · You already know this
You have been using these endings since Level 3: రాము పుస్తకం, నాకు ఆకలిగా ఉంది, ఇంట్లో ఉన్నాను, బడికి వెళ్ళాను. Possession, goal, place — three different-looking jobs. Telugu grammar nevertheless gathers all of them into one case, the sixth, and this lesson explains the logic and warns you where the traditional label and your English instinct will disagree.
సూత్రాలు · The rules
ఈ విభక్తి మూలార్థం సంబంధం. పుస్తకానికీ రాముకూ ఉన్న సంబంధం సొంతం; ఇచ్చిన వస్తువుకూ గురువుకూ ఉన్న సంబంధం చేరిక; మనిషికీ ఇంటికీ ఉన్న సంబంధం ఉనికి. ఏ సంబంధమో తాత్పర్యాన్ని బట్టి తేలుతుంది; విభక్తి మాత్రం ఒకటే.
The unifying sense is సంబంధం, relation. Between రాము and the book the relation is ownership; between a gift and the teacher it is arrival; between a person and a house it is location. Which relation is meant comes from the తాత్పర్యం — the purport of the sentence — while the case stays the same throughout.
ఇది వాడుక ద్వారా మీకు ఎప్పుడో అలవాటైన నియమం — 'తల్లికి' అంటారు కానీ 'తల్లికు' అనరు; 'అమ్మకు' అంటారు కానీ 'అమ్మకి' రాతలో వాడరు. మహద్వాచక పదాలు వికారి రూపంలో 'ని' తో ముగుస్తాయి కాబట్టి వాటికి ఎప్పుడూ 'కి'యే — రాముడు కాస్తా రామునికి.
Your ear already knows this: తల్లికి but never తల్లికు, అమ్మకు but not అమ్మకి in writing. Notice a convenient consequence — masculine nouns end their oblique stem in -ని, an ఇ, so they always take -కి: రాముడు gives రామునికి, బాలుడు gives బాలునికి.
'రాముని పుస్తకం' అనడమే సహజం; 'రాముని యొక్క పుస్తకం' అన్నా తప్పు కాదు, కానీ బరువుగా ఉంటుంది. అనువాదాలలో ఆంగ్ల 'of' కు జతగా 'యొక్క' ను ప్రతిచోటా చేర్చడం తెలుగుకు అసహజం. సంబంధాన్ని వికారి రూపమే మోస్తుంది.
రాముని పుస్తకం is the natural phrase. రాముని యొక్క పుస్తకం is not wrong, only heavy. Translators who reach for యొక్క every time they see an English 'of' produce Telugu no one speaks; the oblique stem by itself already carries the possession.
This is exactly where learners stumble, so hold both labels at once. -కి and -కు feel dative in use but sit in the sixth case in the traditional table; లో feels locative but is listed here too. The seventh case, which you meet next, keeps only అందు and న. Say 'traditionally షష్ఠీ, in meaning a goal' and you will never be wrong.
