Level 9 · Lesson 9 తృతీయా విభక్తి
Instrumental: చేత, చే, తోడ, తో
కరణాన్ని తెలిపే తృతీయా విభక్తి — గ్రంథ భాషలోని చేత, చే, తోడ; నేటి వాడుకలోని తో.
The third case: literary cēta, cē, tōḍa beside the spoken -tō, and what each of them does.
గుర్తు చేసుకోండి · You already know this
కత్తితో కోశాను, కలంతో రాశాను, స్నేహితుడితో వెళ్ళాను — you learned this -తో back in Level 3, and it has been telling people what you did things with ever since. Its grammatical name is తృతీయా విభక్తి, and in the written and poetic language it has three older siblings you will meet on every page: చేత, చే and తోడ.
సూత్రాలు · The rules
చే is simply a shortened చేత, and తో a shortened తోడ, so there are really two pairs, not four separate words. All of them end in the druta — చేతన్, చేన్, తోడన్, తోన్ — which is why a hard consonant after them softens by the saraḷādēśa rule you learned in Level 8.
క్రియను 'దేనితో?' అని అడగండి — వచ్చే జవాబే కరణం. కలముతో వ్రాసెను, కత్తితో కోసెను, కళ్ళతో చూచెను. గ్రంథ భాషలో ఇదే భావాన్ని చే తో కూడా చెబుతారు: 'ఖడ్గముచే ఖండించెను'.
Ask the verb with what? and the answer is the కరణం: కలముతో వ్రాసెను (wrote with a pen), కత్తితో కోసెను (cut with a knife), కళ్ళతో చూచెను (saw with the eyes). In the literary language చే carries the same load — ఖడ్గముచే ఖండించెను, he cut it down with a sword.
Active: రాముడు రావణుని చంపెను, with Rāma in the first case. Passive: రామునిచేత రావణుడు చంపబడెను, and now Rāma has moved into the third case while Rāvaṇa has moved into the first. The doer has not changed; only the shape of the sentence has, and the ending follows the shape.
'మిత్రునితో వెళ్ళెను' అంటే మిత్రుడు తోడుగా వెళ్ళాడని; 'మిత్రునిచేత వెళ్ళెను' అనడం తప్పు. అందుకే -తో కు రెండు పనులు: కరణం (కలముతో), తోడు (మిత్రునితో). ఏ అర్థమో వాక్యమే చెబుతుంది — సాధనమా, మనిషా అని చూస్తే చాలు.
మిత్రునితో వెళ్ళెను means he went in his friend's company; మిత్రునిచేత వెళ్ళెను is simply wrong. So -తో does two jobs, instrument (కలముతో) and company (మిత్రునితో), and the sentence tells you which: a tool means instrument, a person usually means company. This is a clear case of one ending, two kārakas.
