గుర్తు చేసుకోండి · You already know this
నేను సీతను చూశాను, పుస్తకాన్ని చదివాను, ఆ ఇంటిని కొన్నాడు — the -ని and -ను have been on your tongue since Level 3, sticking to whatever the action lands on. Their name is ద్వితీయా విభక్తి. What this lesson adds is the half-step you never had to think about while speaking: before any ending goes on, the noun quietly changes shape.
సూత్రాలు · The rules
క్రియ 'ఎవరిని?' 'దేనిని?' అని అడిగితే జవాబుగా వచ్చే పదమే కర్మ; ఆ పదం ద్వితీయా విభక్తిలో నిలుస్తుంది. బహువచనంలో ప్రకృతిలోని -లు కాస్తా -ల- అయి ప్రత్యయం చేరుతుంది: చెట్లు కాస్తా చెట్లను, పిల్లలు కాస్తా పిల్లలను.
Ask the verb whom? or what? and the answer stands in the second case. In the plural the -లు of the nominative first shifts to -ల- and the ending follows it: చెట్లు becomes చెట్లను, పిల్లలు becomes పిల్లలను. That -ల- is why the tradition lists ల(న్) as a marker in its own right.
ఇది తెలుగు నామవాచకంలోని ముఖ్యమైన మెట్టు. ఇల్లు అనే పదం ఇంటి- అవుతుంది, నీరు అనే పదం నీటి- అవుతుంది, కన్ను అనే పదం కంటి- అవుతుంది. ఈ మారిన రూపాన్ని ఒకసారి పట్టుకుంటే, తరువాతి విభక్తులన్నీ దానిమీదే కూర్చుంటాయి.
This is the pivot of the whole noun system. ఇల్లు becomes ఇంటి-, నీరు becomes నీటి-, కన్ను becomes కంటి-. Learn the oblique once and the remaining six cases cost you nothing extra, because every one of them is built on it — which is exactly why this lesson, and not a later one, is where you meet it.
In speech you will hear రాముణ్ణి and బాలుణ్ణి for the same forms — one classical, one modern, both the second case. Note also that a human object must carry the ending, while a thing may go bare: పుస్తకం చదివాను is perfectly good Telugu.
'రాముని గుఱించి చెప్పు' అంటే రాముని విషయమై చెప్పు అని. 'ఆ ఊరిని గూర్చి ఒక కథ ఉంది' — ఇక్కడ కూడా అదే. రెండు మాటలకూ అర్థం ఒక్కటే; ఏది వాడినా ముందున్న పదం ద్వితీయా విభక్తిలోనే నిలుస్తుంది.
రాముని గుఱించి చెప్పు means 'speak concerning Rāma'; ఆ ఊరిని గూర్చి ఒక కథ ఉంది does the same job for a town. The two words are interchangeable, and either way the noun in front of them stands in the second case. In present-day print the first of them is usually spelt with the plain ra rather than the classical baṇḍi ṟa.
