Level 9 · Lesson 2

మహత్తు, అమహత్తు
Rational and non-rational

తెలుగు నామవాచకాలను ఆడ-మగ అని కాక బుద్ధి ఉన్నవి, లేనివి అని విభజిస్తుంది; వచ్చారు – వచ్చాయి అనేదే పరీక్ష.

Telugu sorts nouns by rationality, not by sex, and the plural verb వచ్చారు / వచ్చాయి is the test.

గుర్తు చేసుకోండి · You already know this

ఆర్క్ A అంతా మీరు 'అతను వచ్చాడు', 'ఆమె వచ్చింది', 'వాళ్ళు వచ్చారు', 'అవి వచ్చాయి' అని తప్పు లేకుండా చెప్పారు. క్రియ ఎందుకు అలా మారుతుందో మాత్రం ఎవరూ చెప్పలేదు. ఆ కారణమే ఈ పాఠం.

Since Level 1 you have been choosing between వచ్చాడు, వచ్చింది, వచ్చారు and వచ్చాయి by ear, and getting it right. The reason behind the choice is a single distinction that runs through the whole language, and it is not the one English or Sanskrit would predict.

సూత్రాలు · The rules

A noun carries three properties — లింగం (class or gender), వచనం (number) and విభక్తి (case). This lesson takes the first, and it is where Telugu parts company with Sanskrit most sharply.

మహత్తు covers human beings and gods; everything else, however grand, is అమహత్తు. A tiger is అమహత్తు and a child is మహత్తు. The line is drawn at rationality, not at size, sex or importance. A word naming a rational being is called a మహద్వాచకం.

In the singular the split is uneven: only a male human takes -ఆడు. A woman, a tiger and a cart all take -ఇంది. That is the traditional statement of the rule; in polite modern speech you will of course say ఆమె వచ్చింది or ఆవిడ వచ్చారు rather than the bare అది of the grammars.

Here the two classes finally separate cleanly: మహత్తు plurals take -ఆరు, అమహత్తు plurals take -ఆయి. This is why the plural is the reliable test. Put the noun in the plural, ask whether వచ్చారు or వచ్చాయి sounds right, and the class answers itself.

ప్రక్రియ · Step by step
