Level 8 · Lesson 1
What sandhi is
Sandhi is what happens where two words meet, and elision is the commonest thing that happens there.
You already know this
Since level 1 you have been saying మేనత్త (father's sister), అక్కడ (there), ఏమన్నాడు (what did he say), దేవాలయం (temple). Every one of them is two words fused into one: That fusing is called సంధి. This level teaches the rules behind what your tongue already does right.
The rules
This is the rule stated in plain modern Telugu, not a verbatim quotation of the sūtra. The point to hold on to: sandhi happens at vowels. In మేన + అత్త the two vowels in contact are the అ inside న and the అ that begins అత్త. One అ stands in place of both, and you get మేనత్త.
Split దేవాలయం and you get దేవ + ఆలయం: దేవ is the పూర్వపదం, ఆలయం the పరపదం. Whatever vowels sit inside the words are none of sandhi's business. A sandhi rule looks at exactly two sounds: the last of the first word and the first of the second.
The tradition describes this as ఏకాదేశం: the following vowel alone stands in place of both. What you actually see is the first word's vowel vanishing, which is why school grammar calls it లోపం, elision. Two names, one event. The next lessons name three such elisions after the vowel that drops:
