ఆర్క్ B కి వంతెన
Crossing into Arc B

గద్యం, పద్యం, కావ్యం — ఒక చిన్న గ్రాంథిక పఠనం; ఆర్క్ B ప్రతి నియమాన్నీ మీ మాటకే కట్టివేస్తుంది.

Prose, verse and kāvya, a short classical reading, and how every Arc B rule ties back to a sentence you already say.

Telugu writing runs in two forms: గద్యం, prose, which no metre governs, and పద్యం, verse, which metre governs completely. A large literary work built of them is a కావ్యం, and one that mixes the two is a చంపూ కావ్యం. The first great Telugu kāvya is the భారతం — the ఆంధ్ర మహాభారతం. నన్నయ began it in the eleventh century, ఎఱ్ఱన completed the అరణ్యపర్వం he had left unfinished, and తిక్కన wrote the remaining parvas. Together the three are the కవిత్రయం, the poet-triad. The same నన్నయ is the poet to whom tradition ascribes the ఆంధ్రశబ్దచింతామణి — the first lesson of this level.

ఛందస్సు అంటే పద్యానికి ఉండే కొలత — గణాలు, యతి, ప్రాస. ఆ నియమాలు స్థాయి 12లో వస్తాయి. అప్పటిదాకా పద్యాన్ని వినండి, ఆస్వాదించండి; కొలవడం తరువాత.

ఛందస్సు is the measure a verse is built to — its గణాలు, its యతి, its ప్రాస. Those rules arrive in Level 12, at the very end of Arc B, because you need the whole of grammar before you can scan a line honestly. Until then, listen to Telugu verse and enjoy it; the measuring comes later.

వివరణ · Explanation

Here is a short reading in the older written register. It is not a quotation — these four sentences were written for this lesson in the classical style, so that nothing in them is uncertain: పూర్వము ఒక ఊరిలో ఒక బాలుఁడు ఉండెను. అతఁడు ప్రతిదినము గురువు వద్దకు వెళ్ళెను. గురువు చెప్పిన పాఠములను శ్రద్ధగా చదివెను. కొన్ని సంవత్సరములకు అతఁడు గొప్ప పండితుఁడు అయ్యెను. Read it aloud twice before you look at the translation. You will find you understand most of it already.

The same story in the Telugu you speak: పూర్వం ఒక ఊళ్ళో ఒక అబ్బాయి ఉండేవాడు. అతను ప్రతిరోజూ గురువు దగ్గరకు వెళ్ళేవాడు. గురువు చెప్పిన పాఠాలను శ్రద్ధగా చదివేవాడు. కొన్ని సంవత్సరాలకు అతను గొప్ప పండితుడు అయ్యాడు. Nothing in the story changed. Only the shapes of the words did — and there are far fewer differences than a first glance suggests.

The differences fall into just three baskets, and you have met all three already. First the verb ending: ఉండెను, వెళ్ళెను, చదివెను, అయ్యెను where you say ఉన్నాడు, వెళ్ళాడు, చదివాడు, అయ్యాడు — the full literary paradigm is laid out in Level 10. Second the ending -ము (పూర్వము, ప్రతిదినము, పాఠములను), which modern writing turns into a sunna. Third the అరసున్న in బాలుఁడు, అతఁడు, పండితుఁడు, which modern writing simply drops. Recognise those three and classical Telugu prose stops being a foreign country.

Now, how Arc B will work. Every lesson starts from something already in your mouth. You have been saying మేనత్త (father's sister) for six levels — it is మేన + అత్త joined by a rule called అత్వసంధి. ఇక్కడ is ఈ + కడ and అక్కడ is ఆ + కడ, joined by త్రికసంధి. కూరగాయలు is కూర + కాయలు, with క softening to గ by గసడదవాదేశం. Level 8 will name and prove each of those. The order of the levels is the order of the ప్రకరణాలు in the బాలవ్యాకరణము: సంధి, then nouns and cases, then the verb, then compounds and derivatives, and finally the sentence and its metre.

ఒక మాట ఇచ్చి ఈ స్థాయిని ముగిస్తాను. మీకు చెప్పలేని వాక్యం గురించి ఏ నియమమూ నేర్పము. ప్రతి సూత్రం వెనుకా మీరు ఇప్పటికే వాడుతున్న ఒక మాట ఉంటుంది. ఆరు స్థాయిల మాటే ఆర్క్ B కు మీ అర్హత.

Let this level end with a promise. You will never be asked to learn a rule about a sentence you cannot say. Behind every sūtra ahead there is a word already in your speech, and the lesson's job is to show you the join. Six levels of talking are not something Arc B replaces — they are the qualification that lets you begin it. వంతెన దాటారు: the bridge is crossed.

పదాలు · Vocabulary

పదం Meaning గమనిక · Note
గద్యం prose ఛందస్సు నియమాలు లేని రచన
పద్యం verse గణ, యతి, ప్రాస నియమాలతో
కావ్యం a literary work చంపూ కావ్యం = పద్యం + గద్యం
భారతం the Āndhra Mahābhārata నన్నయ, తిక్కన, ఎఱ్ఱన — కవిత్రయం

అభ్యాసం · Practice

ఆంధ్ర మహాభారతాన్ని మొదలుపెట్టినది ఎవరు? Who began the Telugu Mahābhārata?
గద్యం అంటే ఏమిటి? What is గద్యం?
గ్రాంథిక రూపాన్ని వాడుక రూపంతో జతపరచండి. Match each classical form with the one you say.
మేనత్త = మేన + ________. మేనత్త is మేన plus what?
‘ఇక్కడ’ ఏ రెండు ముక్కల కలయిక? Which two pieces make ఇక్కడ?

మీరే చెప్పండి · Use it

Read the classical passage aloud three times, then close the page and tell the same story in your own everyday Telugu. Compare the two and name each difference — verb ending, -ము ending, arasunna. Then take one longish word you use every day (ఇక్కడ, అక్కడ, మేనమామ, కూరగాయలు) and write down your guess at the two pieces inside it. Keep that sheet of paper. Level 8 will hand you the rules that confirm or correct every guess on it, and you will find you were more often right than wrong.
