Where Telugu words come from
తెలుగు పదాలు నాలుగు రకాలు; ఏ రకమో తెలిస్తేనే ఏ సంధి వర్తిస్తుందో తెలుస్తుంది.
The four classes of Telugu vocabulary, and why the class decides which sandhi applies.

Look at one ordinary sentence: మా ఇంట్లో గురువు గారు కుర్చీలో కూర్చున్నారు; అమ్మ పొయ్యిలో అగ్గి పెట్టింది. Every word in it is Telugu, but they did not all arrive by the same road. ఇల్లు, అమ్మ and పొయ్యి were always here. గురువు came from Sanskrit unchanged. అగ్గి came from Sanskrit too — but battered on the journey. కుర్చీ came from a third language altogether. Four roads in a single sentence, and the tradition has a name for each.
వివరణ · Explanation
A దేశ్యం is a word Telugu owns outright: ఇల్లు, ఊరు, చెట్టు, కన్ను, తల్లి, నీళ్ళు, పులి. Most of what you have been saying since Level 1 belongs here, and the బాలవ్యాకరణము gives these words their own chapter, the ఆచ్ఛిక ప్రకరణం. Here is a bonus from the last lesson: since Sanskrit has no ఱ, any word spelled with one — ఏఱు, వేఱు — is necessarily దేశ్యం.
తత్సమం is తత్ + సమం, 'the same as that': a Sanskrit word carried over intact, with only its Sanskrit ending exchanged for a Telugu one. రామః becomes రాముడు, గురుః becomes గురువు, పుస్తకమ్ becomes పుస్తకము, భాషా becomes భాష, కవిః stays కవి. The exchange is regular enough that the బాలవ్యాకరణము devotes a whole ప్రకరణం to it — how each class of Sanskrit stem is fitted with its Telugu ending.
తద్భవం is తత్ + భవం, 'born from that': the same Sanskrit word, but worn down by mouths on the way. అగ్ని became అగ్గి, పుష్పం became పువ్వు, భాషా became బాస, శ్రీ became సిరి, రాత్రి became రాతిరి. Often both forms survive side by side — భాష and బాస are the same word twice over, one formal and one homely — which tells you the two roads were open at the same time.
An అన్యదేశ్యం comes from some other language altogether: కుర్చీ, జవాబు, కాగితం and హుషారు from Urdu and Persian; బస్సు, స్కూలు, డాక్టరు, టికెట్టు from English. Notice how fast they are naturalised — the moment a word arrives it starts taking Telugu endings (బస్సులో, డాక్టరుకి), which is the surest sign the language has accepted it. Some older grammars name గ్రామ్యం, the rustic word, as their fourth class instead; the four we use here are the ones school grammar teaches today.
This is not merely a piece of history. Level 8 opens the sandhi chapter, and every rule there begins by naming the class of word it applies to. The Telugu sandhis — అత్వ, ఇత్వ, ఉత్వ, త్రిక, గసడదవ — work on native words. The Sanskrit ones — సవర్ణదీర్ఘ, గుణ, వృద్ధి, యణాదేశ — work only inside తత్సమ words: రామ + ఆలయము gives రామాలయము, but no such rule will ever touch ఇల్లు. So the first question in front of any sandhi problem is not what happens, but what kind of word am I holding.

ఒక తెలుగు వార్తాపత్రికలో ఒక చిన్న వార్త చదవండి. అందులోని పది పదాలను ఎంచుకుని, ఒక్కొక్కదాన్నీ నాలుగు జాతులలో ఒకదానిలో పెట్టండి. సందేహం వస్తే రెండు గుర్తులు వాడండి: ఱ ఉంటే దేశ్యం; విసర్గ ఉంటే తత్సమం.
Read a short news item in Telugu and pick ten words out of it. Sort each into one of the four classes, and keep a tally — you will probably find that the everyday nouns and verbs are దేశ్యం while the abstract and official words are తత్సమం, which is exactly how the language distributes work between them. Two quick tests from this level will settle most doubtful cases: a ఱ means the word is native, and a విసర్గ means it came from Sanskrit.
