పదం, అర్థం
Word, sound and meaning

వర్ణం, అక్షరం, పదం — ఏది దేనితో తయారవుతుంది; శబ్దం, అర్థం అనే జంట.

The ladder from sound to syllable to word, and the pair śabda and artha that Arc B runs on.

Before grammar can say anything it has to decide what to call each piece. Take రాముడు ఇంటికి వెళ్ళాడు. How many pieces is that? Counted as sounds you get one number, as syllables another, as words a third — and all three counts are right, because they answer three different questions. Level 7 has already given you వర్ణం for the first. This lesson fixes the other two and adds the pair that holds the whole śāstra together.

వివరణ · Explanation

వర్ణం అంటే ఒక్క ధ్వని — క్, ర్, ఈ. అక్షరం అంటే ఒక అచ్చు, దానితో పాటు అంటుకున్న హల్లులు. క్ + ర్ + ఈ = క్రీ; ఇందులో మూడు వర్ణాలు ఉన్నాయి, కానీ అక్షరం ఒక్కటే. రా-ము-డు — మూడు అక్షరాలు. న-మ-స్కా-రం — నాలుగు అక్షరాలు.

A వర్ణం is a single sound: k, r, ī. An అక్షరం is one vowel together with whatever consonants ride on it. So క్రీ holds three వర్ణాలు but is a single అక్షరం; రాముడు is రా-ము-డు, three; నమస్కారం is న-మ-స్కా-రం, four. Say each word and tap the table once per beat — your hand is counting అక్షరాలు, and it will agree with the grammar every time.

One warning. An అక్షరం is not what English calls a letter. English cat has three letters but only one syllable; Telugu counts the syllable. That is why the ఒత్తు and the గుణింతం you met earlier fit so neatly onto the page: Telugu writing is built out of syllables in the first place. When Level 12 comes to metre, it will be counting అక్షరాలు, so it is worth getting the habit now.

శబ్దం is another word the śāstra has taken over. In the street it means a noise; in a grammar it means the sound-form of a word considered by itself — పండితులు speak of రామ శబ్దం or పుస్తక శబ్దం much as an English grammarian speaks of 'the word rāma'. Remember the lesson on పరిభాష: inside these pages the technical sense is the only one in force.

Every word has two sides: a శబ్దం, its sound, and an అర్థం, its sense. Nothing in nature ties the one to the other — the tie is an agreement among speakers, which is precisely why Telugu says నీళ్ళు where English says something else, and why one sound can carry several senses at once. Sanskrit and Telugu grammars both take this pair as their starting point, and Arc B will use the two words constantly.

Now the word itself. Not every piece is a పదం. రామ is only a శబ్దం — a bare shape you cannot stand up in a sentence. Add the ending and you get రాముడు, which can. That is the traditional test, and it is a practical one: ask ఎవరు వచ్చారు? and రాముడు answers it, while రామ answers nothing. A పదం is a word with its ending already on it, ready to be used. (The endings themselves are called ప్రత్యయాలు, and Level 9 takes them apart one by one.)

Why fuss over four names? Because every rule ahead is stated in terms of them. Sandhi happens at the seam where two పదాలు meet. A case ending attaches to a పదం. A compound welds two పదాలు into one. Get the term wrong and the sūtra becomes unreadable; get it right and a whole chapter opens with a single definition.

అభ్యాసం · Practice

‘రాముడు’ లో ఎన్ని అక్షరాలు ఉన్నాయి? How many syllables are there in రాముడు?
వీటిలో పదం ఏది? Which of these is a పదం?
వ్యాకరణంలో ‘శబ్దం’ అంటే ఏమిటి? What does శబ్దం mean inside a grammar?
చిన్నది మొదలు పెద్దది వరకు వరుసలో పెట్టండి. Arrange from the smallest unit to the largest.
పరిభాషను దాని అర్థంతో జతపరచండి. Match each term with its meaning.

మీరే చెప్పండి · Use it

మీరు రోజూ చెప్పే ఒక వాక్యం తీసుకోండి — ‘నేను ఇంటికి వెళ్తున్నాను’ చాలు. మొదట అందులో ఎన్ని పదాలో లెక్కపెట్టండి. తరువాత చేతితో తట్టుతూ ఎన్ని అక్షరాలో లెక్కపెట్టండి. ఆ రెండు సంఖ్యలూ ఒకటి కావు — అదే ఈ పాఠపు సారాంశం.

Take a sentence you say every day; నేను ఇంటికి వెళ్తున్నాను will do. Count its పదాలు first — three. Now say it again slowly, tapping once for each beat, and count its అక్షరాలు. The two numbers are different, and the difference is the whole point: word and syllable are two separate ways of cutting the same sentence up. Then try the standing-alone test on each piece: ఇంటికి can answer a question on its own, ఇంటి- cannot. You have just done your first piece of grammatical analysis.
