The sunna, the older arasunna and the visarga: three marks that are neither vowel nor consonant.

Three small marks travel with Telugu letters: the సున్న (అం), the అరసున్న (అఁ) and the విసర్గ (అః). None of them is a vowel and none is a consonant, and none can stand on its own — each can only follow a vowel. That in-between status is why grammar calls the sunna and the visarga ఉభయాక్షరాలు, 'both-letters'. You can see them in అంత, in the old spelling వాఁడు, and in దుఃఖం. Each has its own story.
వివరణ · Explanation
సున్న ముక్కుతో పలికే ధ్వని. దాని ఉచ్చారణ వెనక వచ్చే హల్లును బట్టి మారుతుంది — అంకె, అంచు, అండ, అంత, అంబలి. ఐదు వర్గాలకూ ఐదు వేరు వేరు ముక్కు ధ్వనులు; కానీ రాతలో ఒకే గుండ్రటి సున్న.
The sunna is a nasal, and the consonant that follows decides which nasal you actually say: ṅ in అంకె, ñ in అంచు, ṇ in అండ, n in అంత, m in అంబలి. Five different sounds, one written circle — a very economical piece of spelling. It is also why Telugu writes పంపు and not పమ్పు. In Sanskrit grammar the same mark is called అనుస్వారం, and Telugu books sometimes call it పూర్ణబిందువు, the 'full dot'.
పాత రాతలో నపుంసక పదాలు ‘ము’ తో ముగిసేవి — పుస్తకము, వాక్యము, ధర్మము. నేటి వాడుకలో ఆ ‘ము’ సున్నగా మారింది — పుస్తకం, వాక్యం, ధర్మం. అర్థం ఒకటే, శైలి వేరు.
Older written Telugu ended a whole class of nouns in -ము: పుస్తకము, వాక్యము, ధర్మము. Modern వ్యావహారికం writes that same ending as a sunna: పుస్తకం, వాక్యం, ధర్మం. The word has not changed, only the register — grammar books, inscriptions and classical verse keep the -ము. The one rule you must obey is consistency: never mix the two spellings of a single word inside one piece of writing.
అరసున్న సున్నలో సగం — తేలికపాటి ముక్కు ధ్వని. పాత తెలుగులో ఇది చాలా పదాలలో ఉండేది: వాఁడు, అతఁడు, రాముఁడు, నేఁడు, ఏఁడు. కాలక్రమంలో ఆ ధ్వని పోయింది. నేడు మనం వాడు, అతడు, రాముడు, నేడు, ఏడు అని రాస్తాము.
The అరసున్న is literally 'half a sunna' — a light nasal colouring, written with the half-circle ఁ. Classical Telugu had it everywhere: వాఁడు (he), అతఁడు, రాముఁడు, నేఁడు (today), ఏఁడు (year). The sound itself faded out of the language, and modern spelling simply drops the mark: వాడు, అతడు, రాముడు, నేడు, ఏడు. You will still meet it in printed kāvya, in prosody — where it does not behave like a full sunna — and in grammar books. So learn to recognise it; do not write it in modern prose.
విసర్గ సంస్కృతం నుండి వచ్చిన గుర్తు. అచ్చ తెలుగు పదాలలో ఇది ఎప్పుడూ రాదు; తత్సమ పదాలలో మాత్రమే వస్తుంది — దుఃఖం, అంతఃపురం, పునఃప్రారంభం, ప్రాతఃకాలం, నమః.
The విసర్గ arrived with Sanskrit. No native Telugu word takes one; it turns up only inside తత్సమ words — దుఃఖం, అంతఃపురం, పునఃప్రారంభం, ప్రాతఃకాలం, నమః. It is pronounced as a light breath coloured by the vowel in front of it. Notice also what happens at the border: a Sanskrit word that ends in visarga usually loses it on entering Telugu and takes a Telugu ending instead — రామః becomes రాముడు, గురుః becomes గురువు.

అభ్యాసం · Practice
మీరే చెప్పండి · Use it
ఒక తెలుగు పుస్తకం తెరవండి. ఒక పేజీలో పది సున్నలు వెతకండి. ఆ పుస్తకం ‘ము’ అని రాస్తుందా, సున్న అని రాస్తుందా — గమనించండి.
Open any page of Telugu — a newspaper, a school book, a temple notice. First find ten sunnas and say each word aloud, listening for which nasal your own mouth produces. Then check the register of the page: does it write పుస్తకము or పుస్తకం? Finally hunt for a visarga; if you find one, the word is a తత్సమ word, and you can say so with confidence.
