ఒత్తు, పొల్లు
Conjuncts and the virāma

రెండు హల్లులు కలిస్తే ఒత్తు కింద చేరుతుంది; అచ్చు లేని హల్లు పొల్లుతో ఒంటరిగా నిలుస్తుంది.

How Telugu writes a consonant cluster below the line, and what the pollu mark does.

చదవండి · Read

A language and a script are two different things. తెలుగు లిపి descends from Brahmi, and the Kannada script is its close sister — the two were one script for centuries. This family has a distinctive habit: every written letter carries a consonant and a vowel together, and if you write no vowel mark at all, the vowel is అ by default. So the bare shape క is not the sound k; it is already ka. That single fact explains both of today's marks.

వివరణ · Explanation

Now a problem. In పుస్తకం the స is followed immediately by త with no vowel between them — but the letter స comes with an అ baked in. How do you cancel it? The Telugu answer is to write the second consonant underneath the first, in a small subscript shape. That shape is the ఒత్తు (in everyday speech వత్తు), and it is the ordinary way Telugu writes any consonant cluster.

Look at పుస్తకం, ముఖ్యం, భక్తి and ప్రేమ. In each, one consonant has folded itself under the letter before it. A few ఒత్తులు do not look like miniature versions of their letters at all — the ర and య subscripts have shapes of their own, and in ధర్మం the ర appears as a stroke above the మ instead. Learn those few by sight; the rest are simply the letter, shrunk. One wrinkle catches every learner: the vowel mark of a cluster is written on the upper letter but belongs to the last consonant in the stack. In భక్తి the ఇ mark sits over the క while the త hangs below — yet you hear the i on the ti. Pronounce a stack bottom-up and the spelling stops looking strange.

Last lesson gave you the ద్విత్వాక్షరం, the same consonant twice: అమ్మ, అక్క, ఇల్లు. When the consonants are different, the join is a సంయుక్తాక్షరం: పుస్తకం, ధర్మం, భక్తి. The writing device is identical — both stack an ఒత్తు — but grammar keeps the two names apart because sandhi will treat them differently. Three consonants can stack too, as in రాష్ట్రం.

But what if no consonant follows? Then there is nothing to tuck under, and Telugu uses the పొల్లు — the virāma — which strips the built-in అ and leaves the consonant bare: క becomes క్, న becomes న్. Classical Telugu wrote it at the end of words such as వచ్చెన్ and కొఱకున్, and that final న్ has a name and a whole set of rules waiting for you in Level 8. Modern prose meets it mostly in borrowed words: బస్, కార్, ఫోన్, డాక్టర్. Grammar books also use it to name a sound by itself.

అభ్యాసం · Practice

‘పుస్తకం’ లో ఏ ఒత్తు ఉంది? Which subscript consonant appears in పుస్తకం?
పొల్లు ఏమి చేస్తుంది? What does the pollu mark do?
‘అక్క’ — ఇది ఏ రకం? What kind of cluster is అక్క?
మూడు హల్లులు కలిసిన పదం ఏది? Which word stacks three consonants?
‘బస్’ అనే పదం చివర ఉన్న గుర్తు పేరు ________. Name the mark at the end of బస్.
జతపరచండి. Match each term with its meaning.

మీరే చెప్పండి · Use it

ఒక తెలుగు పేజీ తీసుకోండి. ఐదు ఒత్తులను వెతికి, ఒక్కొక్క దానిలో కింద ఉన్న హల్లు ఏదో చెప్పండి. తరువాత ఆ పేజీలో ఒక పొల్లు వెతకండి — దొరికితే అది పరభాషా పదమా, పాత రూపమా అని చూడండి.

Take any page of Telugu — a signboard will do. Find five ఒత్తులు and name the consonant hiding underneath each one, then read the syllable aloud from the bottom up to prove you have it right. Next hunt for a పొల్లు; when you find one, ask whether the word is a borrowing like బస్ or a classical form like వచ్చెన్. Finally write your own name and one English word in Telugu letters, and notice how often you need today's two marks to do it.
