Level 7 · Lesson 4
Short, long and the vowel series
Vowel length changes the word itself, and how to read a guṇintam row across.

A small test. నా కలం ఎక్కడ? asks where your pen is. నా కాలం ఎక్కడ? asks something quite different about your time. Only one thing changed: how long you held a vowel. In Telugu, stretching a vowel does not make the word emphatic — it makes it a different word. That is why length is one of the first things a grammar has to name.
Explanation
The unit of time is the మాత్ర. A vowel held for one mātra is హ్రస్వం (short); one held for two is దీర్ఘం (long). The shorts are అ ఇ ఉ ఋ ఎ ఒ and each has its long partner directly after it in the alphabet: ఆ ఈ ఊ ౠ ఏ ఓ. That pairing is why the vowel list is arranged two by two. ఐ and ఔ stand slightly apart as the సంధ్యక్షరాలు, but they take a full two mātras like any long vowel.
Line up a few pairs and say them aloud, holding the second vowel of each pair for a full two beats: కలం (pen) and కాలం (time); వరం (a boon) and వారం (a week); నది (a river) and నాది (mine); నెల (a month) and నేల (the ground). These are four separate pairs of words, not four words said twice. English speakers usually shorten Telugu long vowels and lengthen the short ones; the cure is simply to count.
Attach each vowel in turn to one consonant and you get that consonant's గుణింతం. The consonant never changes; only the vowel riding on it does. Every consonant in the అక్షరమాల has a row exactly like this, in exactly this order, so learning one row well is learning them all. Notice what the script is doing: the vowel is not a separate letter standing beside the consonant but a mark fastened to it, and the two together still count as one written అక్షరం. Read down a column instead of across and you get one vowel over many consonants — కి, గి, చి, టి — which is the fastest way to test whether you really know a mark.
Length has a twin: a consonant can also be doubled, and Telugu hears the difference just as sharply. When the same consonant comes twice in a row it is a Compare గుడి, a temple, with గుడ్డి, blind. Nothing separates them but the doubled డ. How that doubling is actually written on the page is the subject of the next lesson.

Use it
Say the three pairs out loud — కలం కాలం, వరం వారం, నెల నేల — counting one beat on the short vowel and two on the long. Exaggerate until a Telugu ear would call it slow rather than wrong. Then run the full గుణింతం of మ from memory, మ మా మి మీ and onward, and finish with the row of your own name's first consonant. Any letter whose row you cannot say is a letter you cannot yet read at speed.
