The alphabet
The vowels and consonants of Telugu, and why their order is a map of the mouth.

You learned the అక్షరమాల as a chant: అ ఆ ఇ ఈ …, క ఖ గ ఘ ఙ …. Nobody arranged that list by taste. It is ordered by where in the mouth each sound is made, beginning at the throat and ending at the lips. The alphabet is not an inventory; it is a map of your own mouth, drawn by phoneticians two thousand years ago and never needing correction.
Explanation
Grammar calls each single sound a వర్ణం, and divides the వర్ణాలు into two kinds. An అచ్చు (vowel) can be uttered alone — hold ఆ or ఈ as long as your breath lasts. A హల్లు (consonant) cannot: it needs a vowel leaning on it. The letter you call 'క' is already a consonant plus the vowel అ, which is why the two lists have to be learned in that order — vowels first, because consonants borrow from them.
The tradition counts sixteen అచ్చులు: అ ఆ ఇ ఈ ఉ ఊ ఋ ౠ ఌ ౡ ఎ ఏ ఐ ఒ ఓ ఔ. The pair ఌ, ౡ has effectively left the language, so most school charts now print only fourteen, and ఋ survives almost only in తత్సమ words: ఋషి, కృష్ణ, మృగం. Notice also what Telugu has that Sanskrit does not. Sanskrit knows only the long ఏ and ఓ; Telugu has a short and a long member in each pair, ఎ–ఏ and ఒ–ఓ. That Dravidian inheritance does real work — నెల is a month and నేల is the ground — and the next lesson is built on it.
The first twenty-five consonants are the వర్గాక్షరాలు — five వర్గాలు of five. Say the five heads slowly and feel your tongue travel: క at the throat (కంఠ్యం), చ at the palate (తాలవ్యం), ట with the tongue curled to the roof (మూర్ధన్యం), త at the teeth (దంత్యం), ప at the lips (ఓష్ఠ్యం). Front to back is not the order — back to front is.
Inside each varga the order repeats the same four steps and then a nasal: plain (క), aspirated (ఖ), voiced (గ), voiced-and-aspirated (ఘ), nasal (ఙ). The aspirates ఖ ఘ ఛ ఝ ఠ ఢ థ ధ ఫ భ live almost entirely in తత్సమ words. The consonants outside the five వర్గాలు are the అవర్గీయాలు: య ర ల వ, called అంతస్థాలు, and శ ష స హ, called ఊష్మాలు, together with ళ, క్ష and ఱ.

Use it
Say క, చ, ట, త, ప slowly, one after another, and notice where your tongue is each time — you should feel it walking forward from the throat to the lips. Then take your own name and break it into వర్ణాలు, calling each one అచ్చు or హల్లు as you go. Do the same for ఇల్లు and for తెలుగు. This small habit of hearing a word as a string of separate sounds is the whole foundation of the sandhi level ahead.
