Level 7 · Lesson 1 వ్యాకరణం ఎందుకు?
Why grammar?
వ్యాకరణం అంటే ఏమిటి, సూత్రం ఏం చేస్తుంది, ఈ కోర్సు ఏ రెండు గ్రంథాలను అనుసరిస్తుంది.
What a grammar is, what a sūtra does, and the two books this course follows.

For six levels you have been saying things like మీ పేరు ఏమిటి?, నేను ఇంటికి వెళ్తున్నాను, ఆమె పుస్తకం చదివింది. You never once had to decide where a word should stand — it simply came out right. Arc B begins with a new question: why is it right? The book that answers that question is a వ్యాకరణం.
వివరణ · Explanation
వ్యాకరణం భాషను కొత్తగా తయారు చేయదు. ఉన్న భాషను విడదీసి, దాని లోపల ఉన్న పద్ధతిని బయటపెడుతుంది. మనుషులు ముందు మాట్లాడారు; పండితులు తరువాత ఆ మాటలోని క్రమాన్ని చూసి రాశారు.
A grammar does not invent a language; it takes the language apart and shows the pattern already inside it. That order matters. Telugu speakers said ఇంటికి long before anyone wrote a rule about it. The rule is a photograph of the speech, not a licence for it — which is why your six levels of speaking are the qualification for this level, not something Arc B replaces.
సూత్రం అంటే దారం. తక్కువ మాటలలో ఎక్కువ విషయాన్ని కట్టి ఉంచేది సూత్రం. అందుకే వ్యాకరణ గ్రంథాలు సూత్రాలుగా ఉంటాయి — చిన్నవి, గుర్తుంచుకోవడానికి తేలిక.
సూత్రం literally means a thread. In a śāstra it is a statement squeezed until nothing can be removed without losing meaning — short enough to memorise, dense enough to cover hundreds of words at once. A sūtra is not an explanation; it is the knot that holds one. Expanding the knot is what a grammar lesson does.
ఈ కోర్సు రెండు గ్రంథాలను అనుసరిస్తుంది. ఆంధ్రశబ్దచింతామణి పాతది; అది సంస్కృత భాషలో, సూత్ర రూపంలో ఉంది; నన్నయ రచించారని సంప్రదాయం చెబుతుంది. బాలవ్యాకరణము కొత్తది; అది తెలుగులోనే ఉంది; పరవస్తు చిన్నయసూరి 1858లో రాశారు.
Two books stand behind Arc B. The ఆంధ్రశబ్దచింతామణి is the older one: a grammar of Telugu written in Sanskrit, in sūtra form, traditionally ascribed to Nannaya, the first poet of Telugu. The బాలవ్యాకరణము of Paravastu Chinnaya Suri (1858) is the modern one, written in Telugu about Telugu. The difference is not only the language of composition but the reader: the first speaks to a Sanskrit scholar, the second to a student. This course walks the second road and looks across at the first.
సూత్రాలు · The rules
ఈ రెండు వాక్యాలు ఏ గ్రంథం నుండీ ఎత్తి రాసినవి కావు. ఈ కోర్సులో సూత్రాలు నేటి సులభ తెలుగులో ఉంటాయి; పాత గ్రంథాల మాటలను ఉన్నదున్నట్టు ఇవ్వవలసి వస్తే అలా అని విడిగా చెబుతాం.
These two are stated in plain modern Telugu — they are our restatements, not quotations. Throughout Arc B the ‹Sutra› boxes will work this way, and whenever a line really is lifted word for word from the బాలవ్యాకరణము or the ఆంధ్రశబ్దచింతామణి, the lesson will say so explicitly.
పదాలు · Vocabulary
| పదం | Meaning | గమనిక · Note |
|---|---|---|
| వ్యాకరణం | grammar | the analysis of a language, not a new language |
| సూత్రం | a rule stated in the fewest words | literally a thread |
| బాలవ్యాకరణము | Chinnaya Suri's Telugu grammar, 1858 | our main text in Arc B |
| ఆంధ్రశబ్దచింతామణి | the older Sanskrit-language grammar of Telugu | ascribed to Nannaya |
అభ్యాసం · Practice
మీరే చెప్పండి · Use it
మీరు రోజూ చెప్పే ఒక వాక్యం తీసుకోండి — ఉదాహరణకు 'నేను ఇంటికి వెళ్తున్నాను'. ఇప్పుడు మూడు ప్రశ్నలు వేసుకోండి: ఎందుకు 'ఇల్లు' కాదు, 'ఇంటికి'? ఎందుకు 'వెళ్తాను' కాదు, 'వెళ్తున్నాను'? ఎందుకు క్రియ చివర ఉంది?
Take one sentence you say every day — నేను ఇంటికి వెళ్తున్నాను will do — and ask three why-questions of it: why ఇంటికి and not ఇల్లు, why వెళ్తున్నాను and not వెళ్తాను, why the verb sits at the end. Write the three questions down. You will not answer them today, but every one of them has an answer waiting in Arc B, and noticing the question is already half of the grammar.
