Are you going to your native place for Saṅkrānti?
We are. Every year the same; this is our custom.
There it is festival for all three days, isn't it?
Yes — Bhōgi, Saṅkrānti, Kanuma. On the first day they light the Bhōgi fires right at dawn.
At our house Mother has already started making the festival sweets.
What all is she making?
Ariselu, gārelu, bobbaṭlu. We also draw a big muggu in front of the house.
For Ugādi, though, one pacchaḍi is enough — all six tastes are in that one dish.

Explanation

సంక్రాంతి falls in January, when the harvest is already in, and it runs for three days with a name for each: భోగి, then సంక్రాంతి itself, then కనుమ. On భోగి the old things of the house go into a bonfire before dawn — భోగి మంటలు వేస్తారు. Through all three mornings the women draw a ముగ్గు on the washed ground in front of the door, and on కనుమ the cattle are washed, decorated and honoured, because they did the year's work. Say it with the plain tenseless form, the way you state any custom:

ఉగాది is the Telugu new year, and it comes in చైత్ర మాసం, at the start of spring. Its one great dish is ఉగాది పచ్చడి, and it is famous because six tastes go into the same bowl: వేప పువ్వు for the bitter, బెల్లం for the sweet, చింతపండు for the sour, ఉప్పు for the salt, మిరపకాయ for the hot, and పచ్చి మామిడి కాయ for the sharp. The year will bring you all six, the custom says, so taste them together on the first day of it. Afterwards people sit for పంచాంగ శ్రవణం — the reading of the almanac for the year ahead.

To say what you do for a festival, put the -కి or -కు you learned in level 3 on the festival's name: సంక్రాంతికి కొత్త బట్టలు కొంటాము, ఉగాదికి పచ్చడి చేస్తాము, పండుగకు అందరూ ఇంటికి వస్తారు. The verb for keeping a festival is చేసుకొను or జరుపుకొను — మేము పండుగ చేసుకుంటాము, ఊరిలో అందరూ కలిసి జరుపుకుంటారు. And ఆచారం is the custom itself, used exactly as you used ప్రకారం for opinions: మా ఆచారం ప్రకారం కనుమ రోజు ఎవరూ ప్రయాణం చేయరు.

Practice

Which festival is the Telugu new year?
How many tastes go into the Ugādi pacchaḍi?
Every year we do it just so; this is our custom.
On the festival day they draw a muggu in front of the house.
Every year we go to our native place for Saṅkrānti.' Arrange the words.
Match the Telugu with the English.

Use it

Take one festival kept in your own place and give it five sentences: Use the -కి of the occasion at least twice, and end with the sentence that closes any such account in Telugu: ఇది మా ఆచారం. Then say the same five sentences about సంక్రాంతి, as though the village were your own.
