వినండి · Listen
స్టేషను దారి
Excuse me, how far is the railway station from here?
It is not far. Go straight on along this street.
After going straight, which way must I turn?
A big junction comes first. Turn right there.
If I walk, how long does it take?
Ten minutes. If you are late, take an auto.
Is the ticket to be had in the station itself?
It is. Inside, on the left, there is the ticket counter.
వివరణ · Explanation
నేరుగా వెళ్ళండి · కుడి వైపు తిరగండి · ఎడమ వైపు తిరగండి · కూడలి దాటండి · వెనక్కి రండి.
Giving directions is a handful of words plus the -ండి imperative you already have. నేరుగా వెళ్ళండి (go straight), కుడి వైపు తిరగండి (turn right), ఎడమ వైపు తిరగండి (turn left), కూడలి దాటండి (cross the junction), వెనక్కి రండి (come back). వైపు is the direction word from level 3; కుడి and ఎడమ simply fill in which side. Watch the two shapes of the verb: తిరగండి is the command, తిరిగి is the -i form that chains onto a following verb — కుడి వైపు తిరిగి నేరుగా వెళ్ళండి.
దారిలో ప్రతి అడుగూ ఒకదాని మీద ఒకటి — 'కూడలి దాటితే స్టేషను వస్తుంది.' 'దారి తప్పితే ఎవరినైనా అడగండి.'
Directions run on the -తే conditional, because every step waits on the one before it: కూడలి దాటితే స్టేషను వస్తుంది, కుడి వైపు తిరిగితే వీధి కనిపిస్తుంది, ఆలస్యం అయితే ఆటో ఎక్కండి, దారి తప్పితే ఎవరినైనా అడగండి. Distance and time are both asked with ఎంత — ఇక్కడి నుంచి ఎంత దూరం? and ఎంత సేపు పడుతుంది? పడుతుంది is the verb Telugu uses for time being taken up: పది నిమిషాలు పడుతుంది, ఒక గంట పట్టింది.
క్షమించండి — దారి అడిగే ముందు చెప్పే మాట. ప్రయాణీకుడు · ప్రయాణీకురాలు · ప్రయాణీకులు.
Stop a stranger with క్షమించండి and the rest of the question can be quite direct. ప్రయాణీకుడు is a traveller or passenger, feminine ప్రయాణీకురాలు, plural ప్రయాణీకులు, and the journey itself is ప్రయాణం. At the station the question you will always need is టికెట్టు ఎక్కడ దొరుకుతుంది? — దొరుకు means 'to be available, to be got', and it puts the thing, not the person, in the subject: టికెట్టు దొరికింది (I got a ticket), టికెట్టు దొరకలేదు (there was none to be had).

అభ్యాసం · Practice
మీరే చెప్పండి · Use it
మీ ఇంటి నుంచి దగ్గరి బస్టాండు వరకు దారి చెప్పండి — నాలుగు వాక్యాలు. ప్రతి వాక్యంలో ఒక ఆజ్ఞ ఉండాలి.
Stand at your own front door in your mind and talk a stranger to the nearest bus stand, four sentences, each one a command: ఇక్కడి నుంచి నేరుగా వెళ్ళండి. కూడలి దగ్గర కుడి వైపు తిరగండి. ఆ వీధిలో కొంచెం ముందుకు వెళ్ళండి. బస్టాండు ఎడమ వైపు కనిపిస్తుంది. Then say the whole thing again with one conditional in it — ఆలస్యం అయితే ఆటో ఎక్కండి — and finish by asking the two questions a traveller always needs: ఇక్కడి నుంచి ఎంత దూరం? and టికెట్టు ఎక్కడ దొరుకుతుంది?
