తరగతిలో చర్చ

రవి — సీత, ఈరోజు తరగతిలో ఒక చర్చ జరిగింది.
Sīta, there was a debate in class today.
సీత — ఏ విషయం మీద?
About what?
రవి — పల్లెలో జీవితం మంచిదా, పట్టణంలో జీవితం మంచిదా — అని.
Whether life in a village is better, or life in a town.
సీత — మీ అభిప్రాయం ఏమిటి?
What is your opinion?
రవి — నా అభిప్రాయం ప్రకారం పల్లెలో జీవితం ప్రశాంతంగా ఉంటుంది.
In my opinion life in a village is peaceful.
సీత — నేను దానితో పూర్తిగా ఏకీభవించను. పట్టణంలో చదువుకు, పనికి ఎక్కువ అవకాశాలు ఉన్నాయి. అయితే నేను పల్లె జీవితానికి వ్యతిరేకం కాదు.
I do not fully agree with that. In a town there are more chances for study and for work. That said, I am not against village life.
రవి — మీ మాటలో నిజం ఉంది. ఈ ఒక్క విషయంలో నేను మీతో ఏకీభవిస్తాను.
There is truth in what you say. On this one point I agree with you.
సీత — చర్చ అంటే ఇదే — ఇద్దరూ మర్యాదగా మాట్లాడాలి.
That is what a discussion is — both sides must speak with courtesy.

వివరణ · Explanation

నా అభిప్రాయం ప్రకారం … — ఇది మర్యాదగా అభిప్రాయం చెప్పే మాట. అడగడానికి — 'మీ అభిప్రాయం ఏమిటి?'

In a discussion Telugu rarely drops a bare assertion on the table. నా అభిప్రాయం ప్రకారం — literally 'according to my opinion' — opens the sentence and everything after it stays exactly as it would have been: నా అభిప్రాయం ప్రకారం ఈ పుస్తకం చాలా బాగుంది. ప్రకారం is a postposition like తో and లో: it stands after the noun, never before it. Two lighter frames do the same job — నా ఉద్దేశం ప్రకారం, and నాకు అలా అనిపిస్తుంది (it seems that way to me). To hand the turn back, ask మీ అభిప్రాయం ఏమిటి?

ఏకీభవించు — ఒకే మాట మీద ఉండడం. నేను మీతో ఏకీభవిస్తాను. నేను ఆ అభిప్రాయంతో ఏకీభవించను.

ఏకీభవించు takes -తో for whatever you fall in line with, a person or a view: నేను మీతో ఏకీభవిస్తాను, నేను ఆ అభిప్రాయంతో ఏకీభవించను. The negative ఏకీభవించను is the standard polite way of saying no to an idea — it disagrees with the opinion and leaves the person alone. Softer still is నాకు అలా అనిపించడం లేదు. And notice what Ravi does at the end of the dialogue: Telugu almost always concedes something first — మీరు చెప్పింది నిజమే, కానీ … — before it pushes back.

వ్యతిరేకం — ఎదురు. నేను ఈ ఆలోచనకు వ్యతిరేకం. దానికి ఎదురుపదం — అనుకూలం.

వ్యతిరేకం means opposition, and with -కి it becomes a whole predicate on its own: నేను ఈ ఆలోచనకు వ్యతిరేకం (I am against this idea), and the denial నేను దానికి వ్యతిరేకం కాదు. Its partner is అనుకూలం, in favour. Add -గా and you have the adverbs: వ్యతిరేకంగా మాట్లాడాడు (he spoke against it), అనుకూలంగా మాట్లాడారు (they spoke for it). The word for the whole event is చర్చ — చర్చ జరిగింది, చర్చలో పాల్గొన్నాను.

అభ్యాసం · Practice

అభిప్రాయం మర్యాదగా చెప్పే వాక్యం ఏది? Which sentence states an opinion the natural way?
ఎదుటివారి మాటతో ఏకీభవించనప్పుడు ఏం చెబుతారు? How do you disagree politely?
నేను ఆ అభిప్రాయంతో ________. I do not agree with that opinion.
నేను ఈ ఆలోచనకు ________. I am against this idea.
వాక్యం — 'In my opinion this work is a difficult one.' Arrange the words.
జతపరచండి. Match each word with its sense.

మీరే చెప్పండి · Use it

ఒక విషయం తీసుకోండి — 'పిల్లలు ఎక్కువ ఆటలు ఆడాలా?' మీ అభిప్రాయం మూడు వాక్యాలలో చెప్పండి. తరువాత దానికి వ్యతిరేకంగా మూడు వాక్యాలు చెప్పండి.

Pick one small question — should children play more, is the town better than the village, is reading better than watching. Say your side aloud in three sentences, opening with నా అభిప్రాయం ప్రకారం …. Then turn around and argue the other side in three more, this time beginning నేను దానితో ఏకీభవించను, ఎందుకంటే …. Doing both halves yourself is the fastest way to make the frames automatic, and it means that in a real చర్చ you will never be caught with only one thing to say.
