బహుశా, తప్పకుండా
Certainty and doubt

ఎంత ఖచ్చితంగా తెలుసో చెప్పడం — బహుశా, ఏమో, తప్పకుండా.

Show how sure you are: బహుశా with -ఏమో for doubt, తప్పకుండా and ఖచ్చితంగా for certainty.

వినండి · Listen

రేపు వర్షం పడుతుందా?

గోపి — రేపు వర్షం పడుతుందా?
Will it rain tomorrow?
సుధ — బహుశా పడుతుందేమో. ఆకాశం నల్లగా ఉంది.
Perhaps it will. The sky is dark.
గోపి — మరి రేపు మనం వెళ్తామా?
Then are we going tomorrow?
సుధ — ఏమో! నాకు ఖచ్చితంగా తెలియదు.
Who knows! I do not know for certain.
గోపి — రవి వస్తాడా?
Will Ravi come?
సుధ — వాడు తప్పకుండా వస్తాడు. వాడు ఎప్పుడూ మాట తప్పడు.
He will come without fail. He never goes back on his word.
గోపి — నిజమా?
Really?
సుధ — నిజంగా చెబుతున్నాను. ఖచ్చితంగా ఐదు గంటలకు వస్తాడు.
I am telling you truly. He will come at exactly five o'clock.
గోపి — సరే. అయితే నేను కూడా తప్పకుండా వస్తాను.
All right. Then I too will come without fail.

వివరణ · Explanation

'బహుశా' వాక్యం మొదట వస్తుంది; క్రియ చివర '-ఏమో' చేరుతుంది — 'బహుశా అతను వస్తాడేమో.'

Doubt is marked twice in Telugu, once at the head of the sentence and once at its tail. బహుశా opens the sentence and the little ending -ఏమో closes the verb: వస్తాడు becomes వస్తాడేమో, ఉంది becomes ఉందేమో, వెళ్ళాడు becomes వెళ్ళాడేమో. Either half can stand alone — వస్తాడేమో by itself is perfectly natural — and ఏమో on its own, as a whole reply, is the Telugu shrug: ఏమో! నాకు తెలియదు.

'తప్పకుండా', 'ఖచ్చితంగా' — ఈ పదాలకు క్రియలో మార్పు అక్కరలేదు. మామూలు వాక్యం చాలు.

Certainty needs no special verb ending at all: put తప్పకుండా or ఖచ్చితంగా in front of an ordinary statement and it is done. తప్పకుండా is a promise — it is built on తప్పు, to fail or miss, so it means 'without failing' and is what you say when you commit to being somewhere. ఖచ్చితంగా is precision rather than promise: ఖచ్చితంగా ఐదు గంటలకు (at exactly five), నాకు ఖచ్చితంగా తెలియదు (I do not know for certain).

'నిజం' నుండి 'నిజంగా'. మాట మీద ఒత్తి చెప్పడానికి — 'నిజంగా చెబుతున్నాను.'

నిజంగా is the adverb of నిజం, the word for truth you met with the proverbs, and it insists: నిజంగా చెబుతున్నాను, నిజంగా నాకు తెలియదు. Between the two ends of this scale sits the most useful sentence of all, and it is not a weak one — నాకు తెలియదు. A learner who says బహుశా for a guess and నాకు తెలియదు for a blank will be trusted when they finally say తప్పకుండా.

మీరే చెప్పండి · Use it

రేపటి గురించి మూడు వాక్యాలు చెప్పండి — ఒకటి 'బహుశా … ఏమో', ఒకటి 'తప్పకుండా', ఒకటి 'నాకు తెలియదు'.

Answer three questions about tomorrow out loud, each with a different level of confidence. Something you are sure of: రేపు నేను తప్పకుండా … . Something you only suspect: బహుశా … ఏమో. Something you truly cannot say: ఏమో, నాకు తెలియదు. Then ask a friend రేపు మీరు వస్తారా? and listen for which of the three words comes back.
