వివరణ · Explanation

వార్త ఇలా నడుస్తుంది — ఏం జరిగింది · ఎక్కడ · ఎప్పుడు · ఎవరు. క్రియలు అన్నీ భూతకాలంలో ఉంటాయి.

A news item does not tell a story from the beginning; it puts the event first and the details after. Read the four questions off the sentence in order — ఏం జరిగింది, ఎక్కడ, ఎప్పుడు, ఎవరు — and you have understood the item: నిన్న సాయంత్రం మన ఊరిలో ఒక కొత్త గ్రంథాలయం మొదలైంది. Everything that has happened stands in the past tense you learnt in level 4, and a thing that simply came about takes the అమహత్తు form: వచ్చింది, మొదలైంది, జరిగింది.

పత్రికలో ఒక మనిషిని కూడా బహువచనంలో రాస్తారు — మంత్రి వచ్చారు · ప్రారంభించారు · తెలిపారు.

Here is the one thing that trips up every learner. In the news a single named person always takes the మహత్తు plural ending -ఆరు, out of respect: మంత్రి వచ్చారు, ఉపాధ్యాయుడు చెప్పారు, ఆయన ప్రారంభించారు — one minister, one teacher, one man. So do not count heads from the verb. If the paper means many people it will say so with a word: అందరూ వచ్చారు, ప్రజలు వచ్చారు.

ఎవరో చెప్పిన మాట — '…' అని తెలిపారు · అని చెప్పారు · అని ప్రకటించారు. 'అట' వార్తలో రాయరు.

Reported speech in the news uses the అని of l05-15 with a formal verb of saying: the words first, then అని, then తెలిపారు, చెప్పారు or ప్రకటించారు. The hearsay particle అట that you met in l05-16 never appears in a news report — a paper does not say 'apparently'. Two words are worth keeping apart as you read: a సంఘటన is something that happened, while a ప్రకటన is something an office has announced. The exam result is a ప్రకటన; the storm last night was a సంఘటన.

అభ్యాసం · Practice

'మంత్రి గ్రంథాలయాన్ని ప్రారంభించారు.' — ఎంతమంది మంత్రులు? How many ministers does this sentence speak of?
'ప్రతి ఊరిలో ఒక గ్రంథాలయం ఉండాలి' ________ తెలిపారు. Close the quotation.
పరీక్షల తేదీలు — ఇది ఏమిటి? Exam dates put out by an office are…
వాక్యం — 'A new library opened in our town yesterday.' Arrange the words.
జతపరచండి. Match the Telugu with the English.

మీరే చెప్పండి · Use it

నిన్న మీ ఊరిలో జరిగిన ఒక సంఘటన ఒక్క వాక్యంలో చెప్పండి — 'ఎప్పుడు · ఎక్కడ · ఏం జరిగింది'. తరువాత ఒక మనిషి మాట కలపండి — '…' అని తెలిపారు.

Turn one real thing into a news item. First say it in a single sentence with the three anchors in order: నిన్న సాయంత్రం మా ఊరిలో పెద్ద వాన వచ్చింది. Then add a second sentence quoting somebody, closing the words with అని and a formal verb of saying. Do it three times with three different happenings, and keep every verb in the past. If you can hear a real Telugu news bulletin, listen for two things only — the -ఆరు on a single person, and the అని before తెలిపారు. Once those two stop surprising you, the news is open to you.
