Asking for help

Soften a request with దయచేసి and -ండి, and use -గలరా? for the politest ask of all.

Excuse me — I need a little help.
Tell me, what do you need?
Please give me that book.
Certainly, I will.
Thank you. This bag is very big too — could you help me a little?
Yes, I can. You walk ahead.
I will not forget your kindness.
Not at all. People should help one another, shouldn't they?

Explanation

A request in Telugu climbs a ladder. The bare stem ఇవ్వు is what you say to a child or a close friend. The -ండి form ఇవ్వండి is the ordinary polite one you learnt in l04-10, and it is safe with almost anybody. Put దయచేసి in front of it and the same words become a real request rather than an instruction: దయచేసి ఆ పుస్తకం ఇవ్వండి. Notice that దయచేసి always stands first, before the whole sentence.

The politest request of all is not a command at all — it is the ability form of l04-14 turned into a question. చేయగలరా? asks 'are you able to do it?', so the other person keeps the freedom to say no, and that is exactly what makes it courteous: సహాయం చేయగలరా? The answer is అలాగే, చేయగలను when you can, and క్షమించండి, ఇప్పుడు నేను చేయలేను when you cannot.

అవసరం behaves like ఇష్టం and ఆకలి from level 3: the person who needs something goes into the -కి form and never stands as the subject — నాకు మీ సహాయం అవసరం, మీకు ఏం అవసరం? The two words that name the manner are worth keeping apart: మర్యాద is the respect you show outward to another person, వినయం is the humility you speak with yourself. A request made with both is rarely refused unkindly.

Practice

Which sentence is the most polite?
Please say one word. (add the softener)
'Could you come tomorrow?' Which one asks it politely?
I need your help.' Arrange the words.
Match the Telugu with the English.

Use it

Take one thing you might ask of someone — a book, a bag, a seat, a minute of their time — and say it aloud three times, climbing the ladder each time: the bare stem for a friend, the -ండి form for a neighbour, and దయచేసి … -గలరా? for a stranger or an elder. Then do the same for two more requests, and finish by refusing one of them kindly: Hearing the three levels in your own voice is how you stop choosing the wrong one under pressure.
