పాత స్నేహం

రవి — సీతా, నీకు, గీతకు మధ్య ఇప్పుడు స్నేహం లేదా?
Sīta, is there no friendship between you and Gīta now?
సీత — ఉంది. కానీ ఇప్పుడు ఆమెకు నా మీద నమ్మకం లేదు.
There is. But now she does not trust me.
రవి — ఎందుకు? ఏం జరిగింది?
Why? What happened?
సీత — ఒక చిన్న అబద్ధం చెప్పాను. అది అంత పెద్దది కాదు.
I told one small lie. It is not such a big thing.
రవి — అబద్ధం చిన్నదైనా నమ్మకం పెద్దది.
Even if the lie is small, trust is a big thing.
సీత — నిజమే. ఇప్పుడు నాకు ఒక ఆశ ఉంది — మళ్ళీ మాట్లాడితే స్నేహం వస్తుంది.
True. Now I have one hope: if we talk again, the friendship will come back.
రవి — వస్తుంది. నిజం చెప్పు, అంతే.
It will. Just tell the truth, that is all.
సీత — అవును. ప్రేమ, స్నేహం — ఇవి నమ్మకం మీద నిలబడతాయి.
Yes. Love and friendship both stand on trust.

వివరణ · Explanation

గత పాఠంలో భావం మనిషికి వచ్చింది — నాకు కోపం వచ్చింది. ఇక్కడ భావమే కర్త — స్నేహం ఉంది, నమ్మకం లేదు, ఆశ వస్తుంది.

In the last lesson the feeling came to a person and the person stood in the -కి form. These four words do something else as well: they stand at the head of the sentence as its subject, and the sentence says what the friendship or the trust itself does. స్నేహం ఉంది, నమ్మకం లేదు, ఆశ వస్తుంది, ప్రేమ ముఖ్యం. This is how Telugu talks about big abstract things, and you will hear it in songs and in speeches all the time.

ఈ నాలుగూ అమహత్తు ఏకవచనం. క్రియ ఎప్పుడూ ఉంది, ఉంటుంది, వస్తుంది, ఉండదు. రెండు కలిస్తే — ప్రేమ, స్నేహం ఇవి నిలబడతాయి.

All four are అమహత్తు singular, so the verb is ఉంది, ఉంటుంది, వచ్చింది, ఉండదు — never ఉన్నాడు or ఉన్నారు, however grand the idea is. Two of them together make an అమహత్తు plural and take the -ఆయి ending: ప్రేమ, స్నేహం ఇవి నమ్మకం మీద నిలబడతాయి. Telugu also says నమ్మకం పోయింది for 'the trust is gone', with పోవు, the other everyday verb for going.

మనిషిని చెప్పాలంటే — నాకు మీ మీద నమ్మకం ఉంది. నమ్మేవాడు '-కి' రూపంలో, నమ్మబడేవాడు 'మీద'తో.

To bring people into it, use two markers you already have: the one who trusts takes -కి / -కు, and the one who is trusted takes మీద. నాకు మీ మీద నమ్మకం ఉంది is 'I trust you'; ఆమెకు నా మీద నమ్మకం లేదు is 'she does not trust me'. Love works the same way — అమ్మకు పిల్లల మీద ప్రేమ — and you can also say అమ్మ ప్రేమ, 'a mother's love', with no marker at all.

మీరే చెప్పండి · Use it

ఒక పాత స్నేహితుడి పేరు చెప్పండి. ఆ స్నేహం మీద ఒక నిమిషం మాట్లాడండి — 'మా స్నేహం చాలా పాతది. నాకు అతని మీద నమ్మకం ఉంది. నాకు ఒక ఆశ ఉంది …'

Speak for one minute about one old friend, out loud and without stopping. Start with how long the friendship has lasted, say what you trust them with — నాకు అతని మీద నమ్మకం ఉంది or ఆమె మీద — name one hope you have for them, and finish with a sentence in which the abstract noun itself is the subject: స్నేహం ఎప్పుడూ ఉంటుంది. Do it twice; the second time it will run.
