వినండి · Listen

అన్న వస్తున్నాడు

సీత — రవీ, రేపు మా అన్న ఊరి నుండి వస్తున్నాడు. నాకు చాలా సంతోషంగా ఉంది.
Ravi, my elder brother is coming from our town tomorrow. I am very happy.
రవి — చాలా మంచిది! ఎన్ని రోజుల తరువాత?
That is wonderful! After how many days?
సీత — రెండు సంవత్సరాల తరువాత. అన్న వెళ్ళిన రోజు అమ్మకు చాలా దుఃఖం వచ్చింది.
After two years. The day he left, my mother felt great sorrow.
రవి — ఇప్పుడు మీ అమ్మకు సంతోషంగా ఉంటుంది.
Now your mother must be happy.
సీత — అవును. కానీ నిన్న నాకు కొంచెం కోపం వచ్చింది. అన్న ముందు చెప్పలేదు.
Yes. But yesterday I got a little angry. My brother did not tell us beforehand.
రవి — ఇప్పుడు కోపం లేదా?
Is the anger gone now?
సీత — లేదు, ఇప్పుడు కోపం లేదు. ఒక చిన్న భయం మాత్రమే ఉంది — రేపు వాన వస్తే?
No, the anger is gone now. Only one small fear is left: what if it rains tomorrow?
రవి — వాన వచ్చినా అన్న వస్తాడు. భయం వద్దు, సంతోషంగా ఉండు.
Even if it rains he will come. No fear; be happy.

వివరణ · Explanation

తెలుగులో భావాలు నామవాచకాలు. 'నేను కోపం' అనము — 'నాకు కోపం వచ్చింది' అంటాము. వ్యక్తి '-కి' రూపంలో ఉంటాడు.

Telugu does not say 'I am angry'. Anger is a thing, and it comes to you: నాకు కోపం వచ్చింది, literally 'to me anger came'. The person who feels it stands in the -కి / -కు form you learnt in level 3 with ఇష్టం and ఆకలి — రవికి కోపం వచ్చింది, అమ్మకు దుఃఖం వచ్చింది, మీకు భయం ఉందా? The feeler is never the subject of the sentence.

రెండు రూపాలు — 'నాకు సంతోషంగా ఉంది' (ఇప్పుడు ఇలా ఉన్నాను), 'నాకు సంతోషం వచ్చింది' (అప్పుడు వచ్చింది). నిషేధం — నాకు కోపం రాలేదు, నాకు భయం లేదు.

Two shapes, and they mean different things. With -గా ఉంది you describe the state you are in right now: నాకు సంతోషంగా ఉంది, నాకు భయంగా ఉంది. With వచ్చింది you report the moment the feeling arrived: నాకు కోపం వచ్చింది is 'I got angry', an event with a time. To say no, use the negatives you already have — నాకు కోపం రాలేదు (I did not get angry), నాకు భయం లేదు (I have no fear). For fear, everyday Telugu also says నాకు భయం వేసింది.

సంతోషం, దుఃఖం, కోపం, భయం — అన్నీ అమహత్తు ఏకవచనం. అందుకే ఎప్పుడూ 'ఉంది', 'వచ్చింది', 'రాలేదు'. ఎవరికైనా అదే రూపం.

All four words are అమహత్తు singular, and the verb agrees with the feeling, not with the person. That makes life easy: the ending never changes. వాళ్ళకు కోపం వచ్చింది (they got angry) keeps వచ్చింది, not వచ్చారు, because what came was the anger. Compare వాళ్ళు వచ్చారు, where the people themselves are the subject.

అభ్యాసం · Practice

'I got angry.' — ఏది సరైనది? Which sentence says 'I got angry'?
రేపు అన్న వస్తున్నాడు. నాకు చాలా ________ ఉంది. My brother comes tomorrow. I am very happy.
'వాళ్ళకు భయం ________.' — ఏది సరైనది? Which form is right after వాళ్ళకు భయం?
నిన్న ఆమె ఏమీ అనలేదు. నాకు ________ రాలేదు. She said nothing yesterday. I did not get angry.
వాక్యం — 'The day he left, mother felt great sorrow.' Arrange the words.
జతపరచండి. Match the Telugu with the English.

మీరే చెప్పండి · Use it

నాలుగు వాక్యాలు బిగ్గరగా చెప్పండి — 'నిన్న నాకు కోపం వచ్చింది, ఎందుకంటే …' 'ఈరోజు నాకు సంతోషంగా ఉంది, ఎందుకంటే …'

Take the four feelings one by one and say a real sentence for each, out loud, with ఎందుకంటే and a reason after it: a day you got angry, a day you were afraid, a day sorrow came to your house, and today, which you are happy about. Then ask a friend in your head — మీకు ఇప్పుడు ఎలా ఉంది? — and answer for them too.
