ఈ పని కష్టమైనది

రవి — ఈ పని చాలా కష్టమైనది. నేను చేయలేను.
This work is very difficult. I cannot do it.
సీత — మొదట ప్రయత్నం చేయి. కృషితో నాస్తి దుర్భిక్షం.
First make an attempt. kṛṣitō nāsti durbhikṣam.
రవి — అంటే ఏమిటి?
What does that mean?
సీత — ప్రయత్నం చేస్తే విజయం వస్తుంది అని. ఇది సంస్కృతం నుండి వచ్చిన సామెత.
It means that if you make the effort, success comes. It is a saying that came from Sanskrit.
రవి — నిన్న కూడా చదివాను. ఏమీ జరగలేదు.
I studied yesterday too. Nothing happened.
సీత — ఒక రోజు చాలదు. ఇప్పటికీ ఎక్కడ వేసిన గొంగళి అక్కడే.
One day is not enough. Even now the blanket is exactly where it was spread.
రవి — సరే. ఈరోజు నుండి ప్రతిరోజూ ప్రయత్నం చేస్తాను.
All right. From today I will make the effort every day.
సీత — చాలా మంచిది. ఈరోజు కష్టమైన పాఠం, రేపు సులభమైన పాఠం.
Very good. A hard lesson today, an easy lesson tomorrow.

వివరణ · Explanation

ఒకరు 'కాదు, నేను చేయలేను' అంటే, వాదన వద్దు — ఒక సామెత చెప్పండి. సామెత చెబితే అవతలివారికి కోపం రాదు.

This is what proverbs are really for. When somebody says 'I can't', a Telugu speaker rarely argues back point by point; they answer with one line everybody already agrees with, and let the other person take it from there. It is the politest way to disagree, because the proverb, not you, is doing the disagreeing.

కృషితో నాస్తి దుర్భిక్షం — కృషి అంటే ప్రయత్నం, దుర్భిక్షం అంటే కరువు, నాస్తి అంటే లేదు. ప్రయత్నం ఉంటే విజయం ఉంటుంది.

This one comes into Telugu from Sanskrit and is said unchanged: కృషి is toil, దుర్భిక్షం is famine, నాస్తి is 'there is not'. Word for word, 'with effort there is no famine' — the person who works will not go short. Sayings of this shape sit happily inside ordinary spoken Telugu; you will hear a farmer and a schoolteacher use the very same line.

ఎక్కడ వేసిన గొంగళి అక్కడే — ఏమీ మారలేదు అని అర్థం. అందని ద్రాక్ష పుల్లన — అందనిది మంచిది కాదు అంటాము.

Two more, both about people rather than about work. ఎక్కడ వేసిన గొంగళి అక్కడే — 'the blanket is still where it was spread' — is what you say about a plan that has not moved an inch in a month. అందని ద్రాక్ష పుల్లన — 'the grapes out of reach are sour' — is for the person who lost the prize and then explains that the prize was worthless anyway. Say both of them with a smile, never as an insult.

అభ్యాసం · Practice

ఒక పని చాలా రోజుల నుండి అలాగే ఉంది. ఏ సామెత? A job has been sitting untouched for a long time. Which proverb?
బహుమతి రాలేదు. 'ఆ బహుమతి మంచిది కాదు' అన్నాడు. ఏ సామెత? He did not get the prize and now says the prize was no good. Which proverb?
________ చేస్తే విజయం వస్తుంది. If you make the effort, success comes.
ఈ పాఠం ________ కాదు, చాలా సులభమైనది. This lesson is not difficult, it is very easy.
వాక్యం — 'From today I will make the effort every day.' Arrange the words.
జతపరచండి. Match the Telugu with the English.

మీరే చెప్పండి · Use it

ఒక కష్టమైన పని గుర్తు చేసుకోండి. బిగ్గరగా చెప్పండి — 'ఇది కష్టమైన పని. కానీ ప్రయత్నం చేస్తే విజయం వస్తుంది.' చివరికి ఒక సామెత చెప్పండి.

Think of one hard thing you are learning right now. Say three sentences aloud about it: what it is, why it is కష్టమైనది, and what you will do from tomorrow. Close with కృషితో నాస్తి దుర్భిక్షం. Then imagine a friend who has done nothing for a month, and answer them with ఎక్కడ వేసిన గొంగళి అక్కడే instead of a lecture.
