వినండి · Listen

కొంచెం ఓర్పు

రవి — సీతా, త్వరగా రా. ఆలస్యం అవుతోంది.
Sīta, come quickly. It is getting late.
సీత — కొంచెం ఉండు, రవీ. నీకు ఓర్పు లేదు.
Wait a moment, Ravi. You have no patience.
రవి — ఇప్పుడు ఓర్పు ఎందుకు? బస్సు వస్తోంది!
Why patience now? The bus is coming!
సీత — మా అమ్మ ఎప్పుడూ ఒక సామెత చెబుతుంది — నిదానమే ప్రధానం.
My mother always says one proverb: nidānamē pradhānam.
రవి — అర్థం ఏమిటి?
What does it mean?
సీత — తొందరపడితే పని చెడుతుంది అని. నిదానంగా చేస్తే మంచిది.
It means that if you rush, the work is spoilt. If you do it steadily, it is better.
రవి — నిజమే. నిన్న తొందరపడి పుస్తకం ఇంట్లో మరచిపోయాను.
True. Yesterday I hurried and left my book at home.
సీత — చూశావా? సామెతలో నిజం ఉంటుంది.
You see? There is truth inside a proverb.

వివరణ · Explanation

సామెత చిన్నది, పాతది. దాన్ని మనం మార్చము — ఉన్నది ఉన్నట్టు చెబుతాము. వాక్యం మధ్యలో ఒక సామెత చెబితే చాలు.

A సామెత is a short fixed saying that everybody in the room already knows. You never rebuild it — you drop it in whole, exactly as it stands, usually at the end of what you were saying. That is why a proverb often has no tense and no person in it: it is not about you or about today, it is about how things are. నిదానమే ప్రధానం is literally 'steadiness itself is the main thing', and Telugu speakers reach for it whenever somebody is rushing.

నిజం నిప్పులాంటిది. — నిప్పు లాంటిది. నిప్పును దాచలేము, నిజాన్ని కూడా దాచలేము.

నిజం నిప్పులాంటిది — 'truth is like fire'. The last word is నిప్పు (fire) plus లాంటిది, the 'like' word you met in level 5. Fire shows itself through whatever you wrap it in, and so does the truth; the proverb is said quietly to someone who is hiding something. Its opposite word is అబద్ధం, a lie.

అబద్ధం ఆడినా అతికినట్టు ఉండాలి. — 'ఆడినా' అంటే even if. అబద్ధం చెప్పడాన్ని 'అబద్ధం ఆడు' అంటారు.

Telugu does not 'tell' a lie, it 'plays' one: అబద్ధం ఆడు. This proverb uses the -ఇనా form for 'even if' and the -ఆలి form for 'must': even if you do tell a lie, it must sit as though it were stuck on properly. People say it with a smile to someone whose story has just fallen apart. Notice that a proverb answers a person without arguing with them.

అభ్యాసం · Practice

ఒకరు చాలా తొందరపడుతున్నారు. ఏ సామెత చెబుతారు? Someone is rushing. Which proverb fits?
________ నిప్పులాంటిది. Truth is like fire.
రవి ఎప్పుడూ తొందరపడతాడు. అతనికి ________ లేదు. Ravi always hurries. He has no patience.
'అబద్ధం ________.' — ఏది సరైనది? Which verb goes with అబద్ధం?
వాక్యం — 'There is truth inside a proverb.' Arrange the words.
జతపరచండి. Match each proverb or word with its sense.

మీరే చెప్పండి · Use it

మూడు సామెతలు బిగ్గరగా చెప్పండి. తరువాత ఒక్కొక్క సామెతకు ఒక చిన్న కథ చెప్పండి — 'నిన్న నేను తొందరపడ్డాను. అందుకే …'

Say the three proverbs aloud until they come out in one breath, without stopping in the middle. Then give each one a home: tell in two sentences about a day you hurried and spoilt something, and finish with నిదానమే ప్రధానం. Do the same for a time somebody hid the truth from you, ending with నిజం నిప్పులాంటిది. A proverb you have used once is a proverb you own.
