వినండి · Listen

ఒక మనిషి, ఒక ఊరు

ఉపాధ్యాయుడు — రవి, మీ నాన్న ఎలా ఉంటారు? ఒక చిన్న వర్ణన చెప్పండి.
Ravi, what is your father like? Give a short description.
రవి — ఆయన ఎత్తైనవారు, సన్నని రూపం. ఆయన బట్టలు ఎప్పుడూ తెల్లగా, శుభ్రంగా ఉంటాయి.
He is tall, of slender build. His clothes are always white and clean.
ఉపాధ్యాయుడు — ఆయన స్వభావం ఎలాంటిది?
What is his character like?
రవి — చాలా మంచిది. ఎప్పుడూ నవ్వుతూ మాట్లాడతారు. ఎవరైనా అడిగితే వెంటనే వస్తారు.
Very good. He always speaks with a smile. If anyone asks, he comes at once.
ఉపాధ్యాయుడు — సీత, మీరు చూసిన ఒక దృశ్యం వర్ణించండి.
Sīta, describe one scene you have seen.
సీత — గత వారం మేము సముద్రం చూశాము. అక్కడ నీలం ఆకాశం, ఎత్తైన కొండ ఉన్నాయి.
Last week we saw the sea. There was a blue sky and a high hill there.
సీత — కొండ మీద ఒక పాత గుడి ఉంది. అక్కడ చల్లని గాలి ఉంది. ఆ దృశ్యం చాలా అందంగా ఉంది.
On the hill there is an old temple. There is a cool wind there. That scene was very beautiful.

వివరణ · Explanation

విశేషణం ఎప్పుడూ నామవాచకం ముందు — పాత గుడి, ఎత్తైన కొండ, తెల్లని బట్టలు. రెండు విశేషణాలు కూడా ముందే — ఒక పెద్ద పాత గుడి.

Everything you learnt at the start of this level is in that little speech. An adjective stands before its noun and never changes shape for who or how many: పాత గుడి, పాత గుళ్ళు, ఎత్తైన కొండ. Two of them simply queue up in front — ఒక పెద్ద పాత గుడి. చాలా strengthens whatever follows it, and at the end of a sentence the adjective takes an ending of its own: ఈ ఇల్లు పాతది, ఆయన ఎత్తైనవారు, ఆ దృశ్యం అందంగా ఉంది.

వాక్యాలు కలపడానికి — చేసి, చేస్తూ, చేస్తే, చేసినా, చేసిన, చేసే, అని. వీటితో వర్ణన ఒక పేరాగా మారుతుంది.

A description becomes a paragraph, and not a list, through the non-finite forms of the last ten lessons. చేసి chains one action to the next (గుడి చూసి ఇంటికి వచ్చాము), చేస్తూ runs two at once (నవ్వుతూ మాట్లాడతారు), చేస్తే sets a condition (ఎవరైనా అడిగితే వస్తారు), చేసినా concedes one (వాన వచ్చినా మేము వెళ్ళాము), చేసిన and చేసే hang a whole clause in front of a noun (మేము చూసిన దృశ్యం), and అని carries anyone's words (బాగుంది అని అన్నారు).

మనిషిని వర్ణించేటప్పుడు రెండు భాగాలు — రూపం, స్వభావం. ప్రదేశానికి — దృశ్యం.

When you describe a person, Telugu gives you two words to hang everything on. రూపం is the outside — height, build, hair, clothes. స్వభావం is the inside — kind, quiet, quick-tempered, generous. Ask with ఎలా ఉంటారు? for the first and స్వభావం ఎలాంటిది? for the second. For a place the word is దృశ్యం, the scene as the eye takes it in, and the verb that goes with all of this is వర్ణించు — ఒక దృశ్యం వర్ణించండి.

మీరే చెప్పండి · Use it

ఒక మనిషిని, ఒక ఊరిని వర్ణించండి — ఆరు వాక్యాలు. మూడు వాక్యాలు రూపం, స్వభావం; మూడు వాక్యాలు దృశ్యం.

Speak for a minute without stopping. First describe someone you know well: three sentences, one on రూపం, one on స్వభావం, and one that uses a converb — ఎప్పుడూ నవ్వుతూ మాట్లాడతారు, ఎవరైనా అడిగితే వెంటనే వస్తారు. Then describe a place you have actually seen: three more sentences with two adjectives stacked in at least one of them, and close with ఆ దృశ్యం చాలా అందంగా ఉంది. That single minute uses every one of the twenty lessons of this level.
