ఒక కథ చెప్పండి

రవి — అమ్మా, ఈరోజు ఒక కథ చెప్పండి.
Amma, tell me a story today.
అమ్మ — సరే. ఒకప్పుడు ఒక ఊరిలో ఒక రాజు ఉన్నాడు.
All right. Once, in a certain town, there was a king.
రవి — ఆ రాజు పేరు ఏమిటి?
What was that king's name?
అమ్మ — అతని పేరు విక్రముడు. అతనికి ఒక రాణి ఉంది. వాళ్ళు ఒక పెద్ద ఇంట్లో ఉన్నారు.
His name was Vikramudu. He had a queen. They lived in a big house.
రవి — తరువాత ఏం జరిగింది?
What happened after that?
అమ్మ — ఒక రోజు రాజు అడవికి వెళ్ళాడు. అక్కడ ఒక పెద్ద చెట్టు కింద కూర్చున్నాడు.
One day the king went to the forest. There he sat down under a big tree.
రవి — ఆ తరువాత? కథ ముగింపు ఏమిటి?
And after that? How does the story end?
అమ్మ — ముగింపు రేపు చెబుతాను. ఇప్పటికి — కథ కంచికి, మనం ఇంటికి!
I will tell you the ending tomorrow. For now — the story goes to Kanchi, and we go home!

వివరణ · Explanation

కథ ఇలా మొదలవుతుంది — 'ఒకప్పుడు ఒక ఊరిలో ఒక రాజు ఉన్నాడు.' పాత కథలు 'అనగనగా ఒక రాజు' అని మొదలవుతాయి.

Every Telugu story has a door you walk in through. The plain one is ఒకప్పుడు — 'at one time' — followed by ఒక and the person: ఒకప్పుడు ఒక రాజు ఉన్నాడు. The old storytellers' formula is అనగనగా ఒక రాజు, four syllables that a Telugu child recognises at once, exactly as an English child knows 'once upon a time'. Notice ఒక doing double duty: ఒక ఊరిలో, ఒక రాజు — a town, a king, no particular one.

కథ అంతా భూతకాలంలో ఉంటుంది — వెళ్ళాడు, చూశాడు, కూర్చున్నాడు, జరిగింది.

Once the door is open, the whole story stays in the past. Every sentence in this dialogue that carries the plot ends in a past form — ఉన్నాడు, వెళ్ళాడు, కూర్చున్నాడు, జరిగింది — and the agreement has to be right at every step: రాజు వెళ్ళాడు, రాణి వెళ్ళింది, వాళ్ళు వెళ్ళారు, పక్షులు వెళ్ళాయి. Chain the small steps with చేసి and let only the last verb carry the tense: రాజు అడవికి వెళ్ళి చెట్టు కింద కూర్చున్నాడు.

కథ చివర — 'అందరూ సుఖంగా ఉన్నారు.' లేదా 'కథ కంచికి, మనం ఇంటికి.' ఇదే ముగింపు.

A story needs a closing door as well. The ordinary one is అందరూ సుఖంగా ఉన్నారు, 'everyone lived happily'. The traditional one is కథ కంచికి, మనం ఇంటికి — the story goes off to Kanchi and we go home — said with a smile as the listener is sent to bed. The word for the ending itself is ముగింపు, and you can ask for it: కథ ముగింపు ఏమిటి?

మీరే చెప్పండి · Use it

ఇప్పుడు మీరే ఒక చిన్న కథ చెప్పండి — 'ఒకప్పుడు ఒక ఊరిలో …' నాలుగు వాక్యాలు, అన్నీ భూతకాలంలో. చివర ముగింపు చెప్పండి.

Tell a four-sentence story out loud. Open with ఒకప్పుడు ఒక ఊరిలో … and name your person. Then give three things that happened, every verb in the past — వెళ్ళాడు, చూశాడు, చెప్పాడు — and check the agreement each time against who is acting. Close it properly: అందరూ సుఖంగా ఉన్నారు, or the old line, కథ కంచికి, మనం ఇంటికి. Then tell the same story again about a woman and hear every ending change to -ఇంది.
