అని చెప్పాడు
Reporting what others said

'రేపు వస్తాను' అని చెప్పాడు — వేరే వాళ్ళ మాటలు చెప్పడం.

Report what someone else said, with అని, the hearsay అట and the defining అంటే.

 రవి —  సీత, అమ్మ ఏం అన్నారు?

 సీత —  'ఈరోజు మన ఇంటికి అతిథులు వస్తారు' అని అన్నారు. 
She said, 'Guests are coming to our house today.'  
 రవి —  ఎప్పుడు వస్తారట? 
When are they coming, do they say?  
 సీత —  సాయంత్రం ఐదు గంటలకు అట. అమ్మ ఇప్పుడు వంట చేస్తున్నారు. 
At five in the evening, they say. Amma is cooking now.  
 రవి —  నా స్నేహితుడు రమేష్ కూడా వస్తానని తెలిపాడు. 
My friend Ramesh let me know that he is coming too.  
 సీత —  మంచిది. 'అతిథి' అంటే మన ఇంటికి వచ్చే వాళ్ళు. వాళ్ళను బాగా పలకరించాలి. 
Good. అతిథి means the people who come to our house. We must greet them well.  

వివరణ · Explanation

మొదట మాట, తరువాత అని, చివర చెప్పాడు. 'నేను వస్తాను' అని చెప్పాడు.

Telugu reports speech by quoting it. The words come first exactly as they were spoken, then అని closes them, then the verb of speaking. And here is the part English speakers must watch: the person inside the quotation does not change. Ramesh said నేను వస్తాను, so you report నేను వస్తాను అని చెప్పాడు — literally 'he said I am coming'. English would move it to 'he said he is coming'; Telugu leaves the quotation alone.

అని ముందు మాటతో కలిసిపోతుంది — వస్తాను + అని = వస్తానని. వచ్చాడు + అని = వచ్చాడని. ఉంది + అని = ఉందని.

In ordinary speech అని fuses with the verb in front of it, and that fused form is the everyday report: వస్తాను + అని becomes వస్తానని (that I will come), వచ్చాడు + అని becomes వచ్చాడని (that he came), ఉంది + అని becomes ఉందని (that there is). So రమేష్ వస్తానని తెలిపాడు and రేపు పరీక్ష ఉందని చెప్పాడు. Say the two pieces slowly once and then let them run together.

అట — ఇది నేను విన్న మాట. వస్తాడు + అట = వస్తాడట. ఉంది + అట = ఉందట. చదవాలి + అట = చదవాలట.

అట is the hearsay particle, and it sticks straight onto the finished verb: వస్తాడట (he is coming, they say), వచ్చిందట (it came, I hear), ఉందట (there is one, apparently), చదవాలట (we are supposed to read it). One small syllable tells your listener that you are passing on someone else's words and are not vouching for them yourself. Beside it, అంటే simply means 'means': 'ఆలయం' అంటే గుడి, and to ask, 'ముగింపు' అంటే ఏమిటి?

Think of three things people actually said to you today and report each one aloud. First keep the words as they were spoken and close them with అని — 'రేపు రా' అని అమ్మ చెప్పారు. Then say the same thing again with the fused form, వస్తానని, వెళ్ళానని, ఉందని. Finish with one piece of news you only heard second-hand and mark it honestly with అట — రేపు వాన వస్తుందట.
