వివరణ · Explanation

మాట మొదట, అని తరువాత, చెప్పే క్రియ చివర. 'నేను వస్తాను' అని అతను అన్నాడు.

Telugu quotes by putting the words themselves first, closing them with అని, and only then naming the speaking: 'నేను వస్తాను' అని అతను అన్నాడు. అని is the full stop of the quotation — nothing opens it, and the verb of speaking never comes before it. Think of అని as English 'so saying', shrunk to two syllables.

తెలుగులో మాటను మార్చరు. అతను 'నేను వస్తాను' అని అన్నాడు — 'నేను' అలాగే ఉంటుంది.

Here Telugu and English part ways. English changes the words when it reports them: he said that HE would come. Telugu leaves them exactly as they were spoken, so the quoted pronoun stays నేను even though you are talking about someone else: అతను 'నేను వస్తాను' అని అన్నాడు. Quote directly and often — that is the ordinary way to report speech, not a special dramatic style.

అని తరువాత వచ్చే క్రియలు — అన్నాడు, అంది, అన్నారు, చెప్పాడు, అడిగాడు, అడిగింది, అనుకున్నాను.

After అని comes any verb of saying, asking or thinking, and that verb takes the usual agreement: అతను అన్నాడు, ఆమె అంది, వాళ్ళు అన్నారు, నాన్న అన్నారు (respectful). A question is quoted the same way, with అడిగాడు or అడిగింది at the end. For your own unspoken words use అనుకున్నాను, 'I thought'. అని also names things: దీన్ని తెలుగులో 'నది' అని అంటారు — this is called a river in Telugu. In fast speech అని often melts into the word before it, so వస్తాను అని is heard as వస్తానని; recognise it, and keep the two words apart when you speak.

Report three things people said to you yesterday, keeping their words untouched: '…' అని అమ్మ అంది, '…' అని నాన్న అన్నారు, '…' అని నా స్నేహితుడు అడిగాడు. Then add one thing you only thought: '…' అని నేను అనుకున్నాను. Watch that the quoted sentence keeps its own నేను and its own tense.
