రవి — నిన్న బాగా వాన పడింది. మీరు బడికి వెళ్ళారా?
It rained hard yesterday. Did you go to school?
సీత — వాన పడినా నేను వెళ్ళాను.
Even though it rained, I went.

Did the bus come?
సీత — బస్సు రాలేదు. అయినా నేను నడిచి వెళ్ళాను.
The bus did not come. Even so, I walked there.
రవి — మీకు ఆలస్యం అయిందా?
Were you late?
సీత — త్వరగా వెళ్ళినా కొంచెం ఆలస్యం అయింది.
Even though I set off early, I was a little late.
రవి — అయినప్పటికీ ఉపాధ్యాయుడు ఏమీ చెప్పలేదా?
All the same, did the teacher not say anything?
సీత — చెప్పలేదు. మీరు మాత్రం రాలేదు!
He did not. You, though, did not come at all!

వివరణ · Explanation

-తే — ఒకవేళ. -నా — అయినా. వాన పడితే వెళ్ళను. వాన పడినా వెళతాను.

Two sentences, one syllable apart. వాన పడితే నేను వెళ్ళను says the rain will stop me; వాన పడినా నేను వెళతాను says the rain will not. The -నా form grants the obstacle and then goes past it, exactly like English 'even if' about the future and 'even though' about the past — Telugu uses the one form for both, and the main verb tells you which.

జతలుగా నేర్చుకోండి — చేస్తే, చేసినా. వస్తే, వచ్చినా. అడిగితే, అడిగినా. చదివితే, చదివినా. ఉంటే, ఉన్నా. చూస్తే, చూసినా.

Learn the concessive beside the conditional you met last lesson, pair by pair: చేస్తే gives చేసినా, వస్తే gives వచ్చినా, వెళితే gives వెళ్ళినా, అడిగితే gives అడిగినా, చదివితే gives చదివినా, చూస్తే gives చూసినా, ఉంటే gives ఉన్నా. The ending is always -నా, and like every form in this level it stays the same for every person and number.

అయినా — రెండు వాక్యాలను కలుపుతుంది. బస్సు రాలేదు. అయినా నేను వెళ్ళాను. అయినప్పటికీ — అదే అర్థం, కొంచెం గంభీరం.

When the obstacle is already a full sentence of its own, do not squeeze it into a -నా form. Finish it, then open the next sentence with అయినా — 'even so, still': బస్సు రాలేదు. అయినా నేను వెళ్ళాను. అయినప్పటికీ means the same but sounds more formal and is commoner in writing than in kitchen talk. అయినా is nothing but the -నా form of అగు, 'to become'; అయినప్పటికీ is built on the same stem with అప్పటికీ, 'even at that point'.

మీరే చెప్పండి · Use it

ఒకే విషయాన్ని రెండు విధాలుగా చెప్పండి — 'వాన పడితే …' తరువాత 'వాన పడినా …'.

Take one obstacle and say it both ways aloud: వాన పడితే నేను రాను, then వాన పడినా నేను వస్తాను. Do the same with ఆలస్యం అయితే and ఆలస్యం అయినా, and with బస్సు వస్తే and బస్సు వచ్చినా. Finish by telling one true thing about yesterday in two sentences joined by అయినా.
