షరతు ముందు, ఫలితం తరువాత. షరతు క్రియకు -తే. ఫలిత క్రియకే కాలం.
A Telugu 'if' sentence puts the condition first and the result second, and the condition is marked on its verb, not by a separate word: వాన పడితే నేను రాను. There is no need to say 'then'. As with చేసి and చేస్తూ, the -తే form itself never changes for person, gender or number — only the last verb does that.
-ఇ రూపం నుండి -తే రూపం. చేసి, చేస్తే. వచ్చి, వస్తే. అడిగి, అడిగితే. చదివి, చదివితే. ఉండి, ఉంటే. తిని, తింటే. కొన్ని రూపాలు కుదించుకుంటాయి — జతలుగా నేర్చుకోండి.
Build the -తే form on the -ఇ form you learned two lessons ago. Some pairs are perfectly regular — అడిగి gives అడిగితే, చదివి gives చదివితే, చూసి gives చూస్తే — and a few shrink as they join: వచ్చి gives వస్తే, తిని gives తింటే, ఉండి gives ఉంటే, వెళ్ళి gives వెళితే. Learn them as pairs and the whole verb system opens up.
ఫలితం ఏ కాలంలోనైనా ఉండవచ్చు. వాన పడితే నేను రాను. సమయం ఉంటే రండి. రోజూ చదివితే తెలుగు త్వరగా వస్తుంది.
The main clause can be anything you already know: a plain statement (మీరు వస్తే మేము వెళతాము), a negative (వాన పడితే నేను రాను), or a command (సమయం ఉంటే రండి). Telugu also uses -తే where English would say 'when' about a general truth: రోజూ చదివితే తెలుగు త్వరగా వస్తుంది. If you want to underline that something is only a possibility, open the sentence with ఒకవేళ, the word you met in level 4 — ఒకవేళ మీకు సమయం ఉంటే మా ఇంటికి రండి.
