రాత్రి ఆకాశం

రవి — అమ్మా, బయటికి రండి. ఆకాశం చూడండి.
Mother, come outside. Look at the sky.
అమ్మ — ఆకాశంలో చాలా నక్షత్రాలు ఉన్నాయి.
There are a lot of stars in the sky.
రవి — చంద్రుడు కూడా ఉన్నాడు. ఈ రోజు చంద్రుడు చాలా పెద్దగా ఉన్నాడు.
The moon is there too. Today the moon is very big.
అమ్మ — అవును. అందుకే బయట వెన్నెల ఎక్కువగా ఉంది.
Yes. That is why there is so much moonlight outside.
రవి — నిన్న రాత్రి నేను చంద్రుడిని చూడలేదు.
Last night I did not see the moon.
అమ్మ — నిన్న నువ్వు త్వరగా పడుకున్నావు.
You went to bed early yesterday.
రవి — సూర్యుడు ఇప్పుడు ఎక్కడ ఉన్నాడు?
Where is the sun now?
అమ్మ — ఇప్పుడు సూర్యుడు లేడు. ఉదయం మళ్ళీ వస్తాడు.

వివరణ · Explanation

సూర్యుడు ఉన్నాడు. చంద్రుడు వస్తాడు. ఇప్పుడు సూర్యుడు లేడు.

Both words end in -డు, the ending that marks a మహత్తు noun, and Telugu treats them exactly as it treats a man: సూర్యుడు ఉన్నాడు, చంద్రుడు వస్తాడు, సూర్యుడు వచ్చాడు. The negative is లేడు — not లేదు, which is what a thing would take. In the tradition these two are gods, and the grammar has never let go of that.

చంద్రుడు ఉన్నాడు — నక్షత్రాలు ఉన్నాయి. ఆకాశం ఉంది. వెన్నెల ఉంది.

Everything else in the night sky is అమహత్తు. నక్షత్రం (star) makes the plural నక్షత్రాలు and takes ఉన్నాయి; ఆకాశం and వెన్నెల are singular and take ఉంది. Put the two halves side by side in one breath — చంద్రుడు ఉన్నాడు, నక్షత్రాలు ఉన్నాయి — and the difference will stay with you.

నేను చంద్రుడిని చూశాను. నేను నక్షత్రాలు చూశాను.

The object marker follows the same split. A మహత్తు word must carry it, so the moon as an object is చంద్రుడిని and the sun is సూర్యుడిని — never the bare word. A thing may leave it off, so both నక్షత్రాలు చూశాను and నక్షత్రాలను చూశాను are fine. In books you will also meet the older forms చంద్రుని and సూర్యుని; level 9 will show you where they come from.

మీరే చెప్పండి · Use it

రాత్రి బయటికి రండి. ఆకాశం చూడండి. తరువాత చెప్పండి — 'ఆకాశంలో చంద్రుడు ఉన్నాడు. నక్షత్రాలు ఉన్నాయి. బయట వెన్నెల ఉంది.'

Step outside tonight and say four sentences aloud about what you can see. Give the moon its మహత్తు verb — చంద్రుడు ఉన్నాడు — and the stars their అమహత్తు one — నక్షత్రాలు ఉన్నాయి. Then say the same thing about this morning: ఉదయం సూర్యుడు ఉన్నాడు. Finish with one negative sentence, ఈ రోజు చంద్రుడు లేడు, so that లేడు and లేదు stay apart in your ear.
