Is this your new house?

Yes. Our old house is near the temple.
రవి — ఇది చాలా అందమైన ఇల్లు. తలుపు కూడా కొత్తది.
This is a very beautiful house. The door is new too.
సీత — తలుపు కొత్తది కాదు. అది చాలా పాతది.
The door is not new. It is very old.
రవి — మీకు ఏది ఇష్టం — కొత్త ఇల్లా, పాత ఇల్లా?
Which do you like — the new house or the old house?
సీత — నాకు రెండు ఇళ్ళు ఇష్టం. పాత ఇల్లు చిన్నది, కానీ చెడ్డది కాదు.

There are good friends near your old house.
సీత — అవును, వాళ్ళు చాలా మంచివాళ్ళు.
Yes, they are very good people.

వివరణ · Explanation

కొత్త ↔ పాత. మంచి ↔ చెడ్డ. 'కొత్త పుస్తకం.' 'పాత ఇల్లు.' 'మంచి పని.' 'చెడ్డ మాట.'

Four adjectives that come up in every conversation, and they are easiest to learn two by two: కొత్త 'new' against పాత 'old', మంచి 'good' against చెడ్డ 'bad'. Before a noun they behave like every adjective so far — no ending, no change: కొత్త పుస్తకం, పాత ఇల్లు, మంచి పని, చెడ్డ మాట. Note that పాత is for things, not for people; a person who is old in years is not పాత.

'ఈ ఇల్లు చాలా పాతది.' 'ఆ పుస్తకం కొత్తది.' 'ఈ పుస్తకాలు కొత్తవి.' 'ఇది కొత్తది కాదు.'

Until now the adjective always had a noun standing behind it. To make the adjective itself the end of the sentence — 'this house is old' — add -ది to it: ఈ ఇల్లు చాలా పాతది, ఆ పుస్తకం కొత్తది, ఈ గది చిన్నది. For more than one thing the ending is -వి: ఈ పుస్తకాలు కొత్తవి, ఆ గదులు పెద్దవి. To deny it, put కాదు after that form and change nothing else: ఇది కొత్తది కాదు, అవి పెద్దవి కావు.

'అతను మంచివాడు.' 'ఆమె మంచి అమ్మాయి.' 'వాళ్ళు మంచివాళ్ళు.' 'ఈ చీర అందమైనది.'

When the thing described is a person, the ending changes with who it is: అతను మంచివాడు for a man, వాళ్ళు మంచివాళ్ళు for several people, and ఆయన మంచివారు when you are being respectful. About a woman, everyday speech says ఆమె మంచిది, and ఆమె మంచి అమ్మాయి is always safe. అందమైన 'beautiful' is the -ఐన type from last lesson, built on అందం 'beauty', and it makes its predicate the same way as the rest: ఈ చీర అందమైనది.

మీరే చెప్పండి · Use it

మీ ఇంట్లో ఐదు వస్తువులు తీసుకోండి. ఇలా చెప్పండి — 'ఈ కుర్చీ పాతది. ఈ పుస్తకం కొత్తది. ఇది చెడ్డది కాదు.'

Pick five things in your house and judge each one out loud in two steps: first with the adjective in front — ఇది ఒక పాత కుర్చీ — and then with the adjective at the end — ఈ కుర్చీ చాలా పాతది. Deny one of them for practice: ఇది కొత్తది కాదు. Finish by saying one warm sentence about two people you know, using the right ending for each: మా అన్న మంచివాడు, వాళ్ళు మంచివాళ్ళు.
