ఆ అబ్బాయి ఎవరు?

రవి — అక్కడ చూడండి. అది ఒక ఎత్తైన ఇల్లు.
Look over there. That is a tall house.
సీత — అవును, చాలా ఎత్తైన ఇల్లు. దాని ముందు ఒక పొడవైన దారి ఉంది.
Yes, a very tall house. In front of it there is a long road.
రవి — ఆ దారిలో ఇద్దరు అబ్బాయిలు ఉన్నారు. ఒకరు పొడవైన అబ్బాయి, ఒకరు పొట్టి అబ్బాయి.
There are two boys on that road. One is a tall boy, one is a short boy.
సీత — ఆ పొట్టి అబ్బాయి మా తమ్ముడు. అతని చేతిలో ఒక లావైన పుస్తకం ఉంది.
That short boy is my younger brother. There is a thick book in his hand.
రవి — మీ తమ్ముడికి పుస్తకాలు ఇష్టమా?
Does your younger brother like books?
సీత — చాలా ఇష్టం. ప్రతిరోజూ ఒక సన్నని పుస్తకం చదువుతాడు.
Very much. Every day he reads one thin book.
రవి — నిన్న నేను కూడా ఒక పాఠం చదివాను. అది చాలా పొడవైన పాఠం.
Yesterday I read a lesson too. It is a very long lesson.

వివరణ · Explanation

పొడవు → పొడవైన. ఎత్తు → ఎత్తైన. లావు → లావైన.

Many Telugu adjectives are built from a noun that names the quality itself. పొడవు is 'length', and పొడవైన 'long' is what you put before a noun; ఎత్తు is 'height' and ఎత్తైన 'tall, high'; లావు is 'thickness, bulk' and లావైన 'thick, stout'. The recipe is the same each time — add -ఐన to the quality word — and the result behaves like every adjective you met last lesson: it stands before its noun and never changes. పొడవైన దారి, పొడవైన దారులు, పొడవైన అమ్మాయి.

'పొట్టి అబ్బాయి.' 'సన్నని పుస్తకం.' — ఇవి -ఐన రూపాలు కావు.

Not every adjective is made that way, so learn each new one with the shape it actually has. పొట్టి 'short' is complete as it stands, exactly like పెద్ద and చిన్న — there is no such word as పొట్టైన. A third small group ends in -ని: సన్నని 'thin, slender'. Keep them in opposite pairs and they stay straight in your head: పొడవైన ↔ పొట్టి, ఎత్తైన ↔ పొట్టి, లావైన ↔ సన్నని.

'పొడవైన అబ్బాయి.' 'ఎత్తైన గోడ.' 'లావైన పుస్తకం.' 'సన్నని కలం.'

A word on which one to reach for. పొడవైన covers both 'long' for a thing that stretches out (పొడవైన దారి) and 'tall' for a person (పొడవైన అబ్బాయి). ఎత్తైన is for what rises up from the ground — ఎత్తైన ఇల్లు, ఎత్తైన గోడ — so it fits buildings and hills rather than people. లావైన and సన్నని describe how thick something is: లావైన పుస్తకం, సన్నని కలం.
