వివరణ · Explanation

'పెద్ద ఇల్లు.' 'పెద్ద ఇళ్ళు.' 'పెద్ద అబ్బాయి.' 'పెద్ద అమ్మాయి.' — 'పెద్ద' మారదు.

A Telugu adjective — a విశేషణం — stands in front of the noun it describes, and it never changes shape: పెద్ద ఇల్లు 'a big house', పెద్ద ఇళ్ళు 'big houses', పెద్ద అబ్బాయి, పెద్ద అమ్మాయి. One or many, మహత్తు or అమహత్తు, the adjective is the same word every time — there is nothing here like the endings that follow a noun. Nothing comes between the pair either. When you want the English 'a', put ఒక in front of the whole phrase: ఒక చిన్న ఇల్లు 'a small house'.

'చాలా పెద్ద ఇల్లు.' 'చాలా చిన్న గది.' 'నాకు చాలా ఇష్టం.'

చాలా turns an adjective up. పెద్ద ఇల్లు is a big house; చాలా పెద్ద ఇల్లు is a very big house. It sits immediately before the word it strengthens, and it works the same way with the feeling words you already have: నాకు చాలా ఇష్టం 'I like it very much', నాకు చాలా ఆకలి 'I am very hungry'. Put చాలా straight before a plain noun instead and it means 'many, much': మా ఇంట్లో చాలా పుస్తకాలు ఉన్నాయి.

'కొద్దిగా అన్నం పెట్టండి.' 'నాకు కొద్దిగా తెలుగు తెలుసు.'

కొద్దిగా is the other side of చాలా: a little, a small amount. It is what you say at a meal — కొద్దిగా అన్నం పెట్టండి — and what you say about your own Telugu — నాకు కొద్దిగా తెలుగు తెలుసు. One more habit worth copying: inside a family పెద్ద and చిన్న also do the work of 'elder' and 'younger', so మా పెద్ద అక్క is my eldest sister and మా చిన్న తమ్ముడు my youngest brother.

మీరే చెప్పండి · Use it

మీ ఇల్లు చూడండి. ఇలా బిగ్గరగా చెప్పండి — 'మా ఇల్లు చిన్న ఇల్లు. మా ఇంట్లో ఒక పెద్ద గది ఉంది.'

Look around your own home and describe five things out loud, each one with an adjective in front of it: ఒక పెద్ద తలుపు, ఒక చిన్న కిటికీ, ఒక పెద్ద బల్ల. Then say two sentences about the house as a whole — మా ఇల్లు చాలా చిన్న ఇల్లు, మా ఇంట్లో మూడు గదులు ఉన్నాయి — and finish by naming your family with పెద్ద and చిన్న: మా పెద్ద అక్క, మా చిన్న తమ్ముడు.
