Where did you go yesterday?
Yesterday I went to the shop. I bought vegetables.
Did you buy fruit?
No, I did not buy fruit. But I bought rice.
Tomorrow, shall we go to the cinema, or shall we stay at home?
Tomorrow I have work. But then I can come the day after.
All right. This book says: 'Today and tomorrow are holidays.'
Yes — మరియు in writing. In speech we do not say it that way.
Explanation
Spoken Telugu joins two statements simply by putting one after the other: దుకాణానికి వెళ్ళాను. There is no little word doing the work of English 'and'. A short pause is the join, and a learner who reaches for a word here will sound like a written notice.
కానీ stands between two clauses and marks the second as going against the first: పండ్లు కొనలేదు, కానీ బియ్యం కొన్నాను. అయితే does the same job with a softer, more conversational feel, closer to English 'but then' or 'still' — నాకు తెలుసు, అయితే నేను చెప్పను. Both come at the head of the second clause, never at the end of the sentence.
లేదా offers a choice between two things or two whole clauses: టీ లేదా కాఫీ, and వెళ్తామా, లేదా ఉంటామా? మరియు is the written 'and' — you will meet it in books, notices and formal letters, and you should recognise it at sight. In conversation, leave it alone and let the pause join your sentences.

Use it
Say two things you did yesterday, one sentence after the other, with nothing between them: Then say one sentence that turns: . Finish by offering someone a choice out loud — టీ లేదా కాఫీ తాగుతారా? Notice that you never once needed మరియు.
