Level 4 · Lesson 15

తెలుసు, గుర్తు
Knowing and remembering

నాకు తెలుసు, నాకు గుర్తు ఉంది — రెండూ వేరు వేరు.

తెలుసు for what you know and గుర్తు for what you can call back to mind.

వినండి · Listen

ఆ ఇల్లు ఎక్కడ?

సీత — రవీ, నీకు లత గారి ఇల్లు తెలుసా?
Ravi, do you know Lata's house?
రవి — తెలుసు. అది గుడి పక్కన ఉంది.
I know it. It is next to the temple.
సీత — నేను మొన్న అక్కడికి వెళ్ళాను. ఇప్పుడు నాకు దారి గుర్తు లేదు.
I went there the day before yesterday. Now I do not remember the way.
రవి — నాకు గుర్తు ఉంది. బడి దగ్గర ఒక దారి ఉంది. ఆ దారిలో వెళ్ళాలి.
I remember. There is a lane near the school. You must go along that lane.
సీత — ధన్యవాదాలు. వాళ్ళ అమ్మాయి పేరు నాకు తెలియదు.
Thank you. I do not know their daughter's name.
రవి — ఆమె పేరు గీత. ఆమె దగ్గర నేను తెలుగు నేర్చుకున్నాను.
Her name is Gita. I learnt Telugu from her.
సీత — అవును! నేను ఆ పేరు మరచిపోయాను.
Yes! I had forgotten that name.

వివరణ · Explanation

తెలుసు — 'కు' విభక్తితో వస్తుంది. నాకు తెలుసు, నీకు తెలుసు, మీకు తెలుసు, అతనికి తెలుసు, వాళ్ళకు తెలుసు. రూపం మారదు.

తెలుసు works like ఇష్టం and ఆకలి from level 3: the person who knows stands in the -కు form, not as the subject. So నాకు తెలుసు, never నేను తెలుసు. The thing known simply stands beside it — నాకు ఆ ఇల్లు తెలుసు, నాకు తెలుగు తెలుసు. The word itself never changes for who or how many, and its negative is the equally unchanging తెలియదు: వాళ్ళకు తెలియదు. To ask, add -ఆ: మీకు తెలుసా?

గుర్తు — 'ఉంది', 'లేదు'తో వాడతాము. నాకు గుర్తు ఉంది. నాకు గుర్తు లేదు. మాటల్లో — గుర్తుంది, గుర్తులేదు.

గుర్తు is a noun, so it needs ఉంది or లేదు beside it: నాకు గుర్తు ఉంది, నాకు ఆ దారి గుర్తు లేదు, మీకు గుర్తు ఉందా? In ordinary speech the two words run together as గుర్తుంది and గుర్తులేదు, and you will hear that far more often than the separated form.

తెలుసు వేరు, గుర్తు వేరు. 'నాకు ఆ ఊరు తెలుసు' — నేను అక్కడికి వెళ్ళాను, ఆ ఊరు నాకు తెలుసు. 'నాకు ఆ ఊరి పేరు గుర్తు లేదు' — పేరు ఇప్పుడు మనసులో లేదు.

Keep the two apart. తెలుసు is about knowledge you hold — a place, a language, a person, a fact. గుర్తు is about recall at this moment: you know the town perfectly well, but its name will not come to you. Two more past-tense verbs belong here: మరచిపోయాను (I forgot) and నేర్చుకున్నాను (I learnt), which change for person like any past form — మరచిపోయాడు, మరచిపోయారు, నేర్చుకుంది, నేర్చుకున్నారు.

'Do you know Telugu?' — ఏది సరైనది? Which sentence is correct?
నాకు ఆ పేరు గుర్తు ________. I do not remember that name.
'I do not know.' — ఏది సరైనది? Which one means 'I do not know'?

మీరే చెప్పండి · Use it

మీకు ఏ ఊళ్ళు తెలుసు? మూడు చెప్పండి — 'నాకు … తెలుసు.' తరువాత ఇలా చెప్పండి — 'నాకు ఆ పేరు గుర్తు లేదు. నేను మరచిపోయాను.'

Name three places or people you know, each with the -కు form: నాకు హైదరాబాద్ తెలుసు, నాకు ఆ ఇల్లు తెలుసు, మా అమ్మకు ఆ ఊరు తెలుసు. Then admit to one thing you have forgotten: నాకు ఆ పేరు గుర్తు లేదు, నేను మరచిపోయాను. Close with something you have actually learnt so far: నేను తెలుగు నేర్చుకున్నాను.
