Ravi, can you come to our house tomorrow?
I cannot come tomorrow. I have work. I can come the day after.
Fine. At our house everyone speaks Telugu.
I can speak a little Telugu. I still cannot speak it well.
Do not be afraid. My mother can speak slowly.
Can your father speak English?
He cannot. You two will have to talk in Telugu!

Explanation

This form is built on the same base as చేయాలి and చేయవచ్చు, but unlike them it does change for person, exactly the way an ordinary verb does: చేయగలను, చేయగలవు, చేయగలడు, చేయగలదు, చేయగలము, చేయగలరు. So రాగలను (I can come), మాట్లాడగలరు (you can speak), వెళ్ళగలదు (she can go). Ask with -ఆ: రాగలవా?

The negative is not -గలను with a 'no' added; it is a form of its own in -లేను: చేయలేను, రాలేను, మాట్లాడలేను, తినలేను. Careful with one form: for ఆమె and for a thing, 'cannot do' comes out as చేయలేదు, which looks exactly like the past negative చేయలేదు (did not do). Telugu lets the situation decide, so name the subject clearly or reword the sentence when it could be misread.

Keep the two apart. రావచ్చా? asks whether you are allowed, and its answers are రావచ్చు or ఇప్పుడు వద్దు. రాగలవా? asks whether you are able, and its answers are రాగలను or రాలేను. English blurs both into 'can', so translate from the situation and not from the word.

I can speak a little Telugu.
What does నువ్వు రాగలవా? ask about?

Match each form with its meaning.

Use it

Say three things you are able to do and three you are not: నేను కొంచెం తెలుగు మాట్లాడగలను, నేను వంట చేయగలను, నేను రేపు రాగలను — then నేను ఇప్పుడు రాలేను, నేను హిందీ మాట్లాడలేను. Finish with one question for a friend, రాగలవా?, and one for an elder, రాగలరా?, and give both answers yourself.
