Must and should

I will sleep a little longer, Mother.  
 అమ్మ —  వద్దు. ఈరోజు నువ్వు బడికి వెళ్ళాలి. 
No. Today you must go to school.  
 రవి —  ఈరోజు బడి ఉందా? ఈరోజు సెలవు. 
Is there school today? Today is a holiday.  
 అమ్మ —  సెలవు లేదు. రేపు పరీక్ష. ఈరోజు నువ్వు పాఠం చదవాలి. 
It is not a holiday. The exam is tomorrow. Today you must study the lesson.  
 రవి —  సరే. నేను ముందు స్నానం చేయాలి. 
All right. First I must have a bath.  
 అమ్మ —  అవును. అన్నం తినాలి. ఇది ముఖ్యం. 
Yes. And you must eat. That is important.

వివరణ · Explanation

-ఆలి — 'ఇది ముఖ్యం, ఇలా జరగాలి' అని అర్థం. చేయు — చేయాలి. వెళ్ళు — వెళ్ళాలి. చదువు — చదవాలి. తిను — తినాలి. వచ్చు — రావాలి.

Add -ఆలి to the verb stem and you have said 'must' or 'should': చేయాలి, వెళ్ళాలి, తినాలి, చూడాలి, చెప్పాలి, మాట్లాడాలి, కొనాలి, ఇవ్వాలి. Two stems reshape a little and are worth learning as pairs: చదువు gives చదవాలి, and వచ్చు gives రావాలి — the same రా you already know from the command రండి.

ఈ రూపం మారదు — నేను వెళ్ళాలి, నువ్వు వెళ్ళాలి, ఆమె వెళ్ళాలి, మేము వెళ్ళాలి, మీరు వెళ్ళాలి, వాళ్ళు వెళ్ళాలి.

This is the easiest form in the whole level: it never changes. Unlike వెళ్ళాను, వెళ్ళావు, వెళ్ళాడు, వెళ్ళారు, the form వెళ్ళాలి stays exactly as it is for every person, every number, మహత్తు and అమహత్తు alike. Only the pronoun in front tells you who has to go, so never drop it.

'ఇది ముఖ్యం' — ఇక్కడ క్రియ లేదు. 'ఈ పాఠం ముఖ్యం.' 'నాకు ఇది ముఖ్యం.'

ముఖ్యం means 'important', and like ఇష్టం it needs no verb: ఇది ముఖ్యం, ఈ పాఠం ముఖ్యం, నాకు ఇది ముఖ్యం. It sits naturally beside an obligation — ఈరోజు చదవాలి, ఇది ముఖ్యం. And when you want to say the opposite of మీరు వెళ్ళాలి, use the prohibitive you learnt last lesson: మీరు వెళ్ళకండి.

ఈరోజు మీరు ఏం చేయాలి? మూడు పనులు బిగ్గరగా చెప్పండి — 'నేను ఈరోజు … ఆలి.' తరువాత చెప్పండి — 'ఈ పని ముఖ్యం.'

Say out loud the three things you have to do today, each one with -ఆలి: నేను ఈరోజు పని చేయాలి, నేను దుకాణానికి వెళ్ళాలి, నేను ఈ పుస్తకం చదవాలి. Then pick the one that matters most and add ఇది ముఖ్యం. Finish with one thing somebody else has to do — మా అమ్మ ఈరోజు రావాలి — and notice that the verb did not change at all.
