వివరణ · Explanation

కోరికకు ఈ వాక్యం — మనిషి '-కి' రూపంలో. నాకు, నీకు, మీకు, రవికి. కావాలి మారదు.

Telugu does not say 'I want'. The person who wants goes into the -కి form you learnt in level 3, the thing wanted stands plain, and కావాలి closes the sentence without changing for anybody: నాకు టీ కావాలి, నీకు ఏం కావాలి?, మాకు నీళ్ళు కావాలి, రవికి రెండు పుస్తకాలు కావాలి. It is the same shape as నాకు ఇష్టం and నాకు జ్వరం — the sentence has no subject in the English sense at all.

కావాలా? — ప్రశ్న. రెండు జవాబులు — కావాలి, వద్దు. టీ కావాలా? అవును, కావాలి.

Stretch the end into కావాలా? and you have the offer a host makes all day long: టీ కావాలా?, ఇంకొంచెం కావాలా?. Accept with కావాలి, refuse with వద్దు. Both stay the same for every person, so నాకు వద్దు, మాకు వద్దు, ఆమెకు వద్దు need no thought at all.

మూడు 'కాదు' లను వేరుగా ఉంచండి — ఇది నా ఇల్లు కాదు. ఇక్కడ టీ లేదు. నాకు టీ వద్దు.

Three refusals sit close together, and each has its own job. కాదు denies what a thing is: ఇది నా ఇల్లు కాదు. లేదు denies that a thing is there: ఇక్కడ టీ లేదు. వద్దు refuses what is offered: నాకు టీ వద్దు. Say the wrong one and a host will hear something quite different from what you meant. చాలు is the gentler refusal — it means 'I have had enough', so it thanks and declines in one word.

Imagine you are the guest at that table. Ask for three things — నాకు కొంచెం అన్నం కావాలి, నాకు నీళ్ళు కావాలి, నాకు టీ కావాలి — and turn two things down with నాకు … వద్దు. Then swap sides and be the host: offer each item with కావాలా? and close the meal with the two words a guest says last, చాలు, ధన్యవాదాలు.
