Saying no about the past

భూతకాల నిషేధం — ధాతువు + లేదు. నేను రాలేదు, నువ్వు రాలేదు, అతను రాలేదు, ఆమె రాలేదు, మేము రాలేదు, వాళ్ళు రాలేదు, అవి రాలేదు.
Here Telugu is unexpectedly kind. Take the plain verb stem, put -లేదు on it, and you are finished — the form does not change for person, for number, or for మహత్తు and అమహత్తు. నేను రాలేదు, నువ్వు రాలేదు, అతను రాలేదు, ఆమె రాలేదు, మేము రాలేదు, వాళ్ళు రాలేదు, అవి రాలేదు: seven subjects, one verb form. It is the same లేదు you learnt in level 1, now doing duty on a verb.
భూతకాలంలో ధాతువు మారుతుంది — వచ్చాడు, తిన్నాడు, చూశాడు, చదివాడు. నిషేధంలో ధాతువు మారదు — రాలేదు, తినలేదు, చూడలేదు, చదవలేదు.
Compare the two sides. The positive past changes for everybody and several stems are irregular there — వచ్చాడు, తిన్నాడు, చూశాడు, చదివాడు. The negative throws all of that away and goes back to the plain stem: రాలేదు, తినలేదు, చూడలేదు, చదవలేదు. So learn the negative from the dictionary stem, never from the past form.
రెండు నిషేధాలను వేరుగా ఉంచండి — నేను రేపు రాను. నేను నిన్న రాలేదు.
Keep the two negatives apart by their time word. నేను రేపు రాను is 'I will not come tomorrow' — the one-word negative of the last lesson. నేను నిన్న రాలేదు is 'I did not come yesterday'. Ask a yes-no question of it exactly as you would of any sentence, by lengthening the end: నిన్న రాలేదా? and the answer is లేదు, రాలేదు.

Tell yesterday out loud in four sentences: two things you did and two you did not. నిన్న నేను బడికి వెళ్ళాను, కొంచెం చదివాను, సినిమా చూడలేదు, స్నేహితుడితో మాట్లాడలేదు. Then say the last two again with మేము and with వాళ్ళు as the subject, and notice that the verb does not move at all.
