వివరణ · Explanation

గుడికి వెళుతున్నాము — ఎక్కడికి? గుడిలో పూజ ఉంది — ఎక్కడ?

One noun, two markers, two different meanings. -కి points at the goal you are moving toward and goes with verbs of motion — గుడికి వెళుతున్నాము, ఇంటికి వస్తున్నాను. -లో names the place the action sits inside, with any verb at all — గుడిలో పూజ ఉంది, ఆలయంలో ప్రసాదం ఇస్తున్నారు. If you can ask ఎక్కడికి? use -కి; if you can ask ఎక్కడ? use -లో.

గుడి + కి = గుడికి. ఆలయం + కి = ఆలయానికి. ఇల్లు + కి = ఇంటికి.

Attaching -కి is easy after a word ending in ఇ: గుడి becomes గుడికి, బడి becomes బడికి. A word ending in -ం behaves differently — it drops the ం and takes -ానికి: ఆలయం gives ఆలయానికి, దుకాణం gives దుకాణానికి, పుస్తకం gives పుస్తకానికి. And ఇల్లు keeps its old irregular pair, ఇంటికి and ఇంట్లో, which you simply memorise together. Note that -లో needs none of this: ఆలయంలో, దుకాణంలో.

దేవుడికి పూజ చేస్తున్నారు. అందరికీ ప్రసాదం ఇస్తున్నారు.

The same -కి also marks the person the action is aimed at, which you met in the last lesson with విద్యార్థికి. దేవుడు takes -కి in the everyday spelling దేవుడికి; అందరూ gives అందరికీ. So the temple sentence carries both uses at once: ఆలయంలో దేవుడికి పూజ చేస్తున్నారు — place with -లో, recipient with -కి, verb last.
