వివరణ · Explanation
వస్తువులు — ఒకటి, రెండు, మూడు. మనుషులు — ఒకరు, ఇద్దరు, ముగ్గురు.
Telugu counts people with a second set of numerals, and you cannot borrow one set for the other. Things take ఒకటి, రెండు, మూడు, నాలుగు, ఐదు; people take ఒకరు, ఇద్దరు, ముగ్గురు, నలుగురు, ఐదుగురు, and on through ఆరుగురు and ఏడుగురు. So రెండు పుస్తకాలు but ఇద్దరు అబ్బాయిలు — never మూడు అమ్మాయిలు, always ముగ్గురు అమ్మాయిలు. From about eight upward the everyday count uses మంది instead: పది మంది, వంద మంది.
'ఐదుగురు ఉన్నారు' · 'పది కుర్చీలు ఉన్నాయి.'
The second half of the rule is the verb. People are మహత్తు, and their plural verb ends in -ఆరు: ఐదుగురు ఉన్నారు, ముగ్గురు వస్తున్నారు. Things are అమహత్తు, and their plural verb ends in -ఆయి: పది కుర్చీలు ఉన్నాయి, రెండు బస్సులు వస్తున్నాయి. In the singular the two sides fall together — ఆమె ఉంది and అది ఉంది are the same shape — so the plural is where you have to be careful, and it is also where a listener notices at once.
ప్రశ్న — 'ఎందరు?' లేదా 'ఎంతమంది?'. వస్తువులకు 'ఎన్ని?'
Ask about people with ఎందరు? or, just as commonly, ఎంతమంది? — both mean 'how many people?'. Keep ఎన్ని? for things: ఎన్ని పుస్తకాలు ఉన్నాయి? Two words you already know belong to this same people-set and now make sense as a family: అందరూ 'everyone' and ఒకరు 'one person, someone'. They all end in the same -రు.

అభ్యాసం · Practice
మీరే చెప్పండి · Use it
మీ ఇంట్లో ఎందరు ఉన్నారు? బిగ్గరగా చెప్పండి — 'మా ఇంట్లో నలుగురు ఉన్నారు. అమ్మ, నాన్న, అక్క, నేను.' ఇప్పుడు వస్తువులు — 'ఇంట్లో ఎనిమిది కుర్చీలు ఉన్నాయి.'
Say aloud how many people are in your house and name them: మా ఇంట్లో నలుగురు ఉన్నారు — అమ్మ, నాన్న, అక్క, నేను. Then count the furniture in the same breath: ఇంట్లో ఎనిమిది కుర్చీలు ఉన్నాయి. Say the two sentences one after the other four or five times, and listen for the swap between ఉన్నారు and ఉన్నాయి — that swap is the whole lesson.
